1 LAUREL PARK TURF N0TES " - Stake blanks embracing the Riggs Handicap, at one mile and one-half; the Walden Handicap, at one mile and a sixteenth, and the Bowie Handicap, at one mile and one-half, to be decided during the meeting of the Maryland Jockey. Club in November, were distributed among the horsemen by Edward J. Brennan. Nominations for these fixtures close on Friday, October 7. The horses trained by E. L. FitzGerald for the Northway Stable will in the future race in the name of their owner, Norman Church. Jockey M. Lewis, who led the list of riders during the Latonia and Hawthorne meetings and who is engaged to handle t;3 horses off the Cold Stream Stable, was an arrival. Lewis is capable of scaling 101 pounds, and his engagements will be made by Basil Smith. In an effort to put some speed back in his racing strip, track superintendent Woods Dickerson scraped almost six inches of soil off the course last night. Work watchers this morning say the thoroughbreds worked almost two seconds faster than the moves recorded yesterday. Mose Lowenstein has taken second call on the services of Tex Callahan, who has been riding in fine form recently. Max Hirsch holds first call on the boys services. General Court is the latest addition to the schooling list. William Doyle of Laurel and Herman P. Conklin of Baltimore have been named placing judges at the Fair Grounds, New Orleans. Jockey Johnny Pierce left this morning for the York, Pa., meeting, which opens today. Pat Dunne, noted turfman of old, and father of Francis Dunne, a well-known western official, was a visitor. Jockey Melvin Lewis, third leading winning rider in America last year with 146 victories, was an arrival from Chicago. Pat Remillard, winner of twenty-six races in twelve days on state half milers, was an arrival from his home in North Dakota. William Doyle is distributing stall applications among horsemen for the winters racing at Agua Caliente, Mexico. Racing secretary Joseph McLennan and others of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Fair Association, will decide some time this week on the stakes to be run during next month at Bowie.
