ANOTHER FOR 0TT1E M. Clellands Ride and Muddy Track Helpful to Sciaccaluga Filly. Fairmount Park Gets First Wintry Weather After Rain Tarpon Returns .to Winner Ranks. COLLINSVILLE, 111., Oct. 4 Riding the tail of a cold rain that left the racing strip in a muddy condition, old man winter descended on Fairmount Park today and only the most faithful patrons of racing were present to view the eight-race program. There was nothing in the way of a feature provided for the small gathering that came wrapped in heavy coats and furs, and the patrons only ventured from shelter of the cutting breeze to view the running of the races. After the opening trio of events had engaged fields at six furlongs, the fourth race brought together ten shifty two-year-olds at one mile, and it enabled Otis Clelland to garner his second consecutive victory when he put forth one of his best exhibitions of horsemanship to land Mrs. J. Sciaccalugas Ottie M. home the winner over Black Flash, with Miss Hutcheson third. The juveniles came together under claiming conditions, and Clellands energetic riding was largely responsible for the Sciaccaluga fillys success. CLELLANDS GOOD RD3E. There was little delay at the start of the fourth, and Maeone and Ottie M. went out to show the way. Shortly after turning into the back stretch, Ottie M. attempted to draw away from her opponent, but Maeone continued to hold on gamely, and it was not untif the final quarter was reached that she was able to draw clear. However, Ottie M. raced very wide as the field turned into the stretch, and Black Flash came through on the rail to take command nearing the sixteenth pole. Under Clellands good skill, the filly was straightened up and as he went to the whip she responded gamely to lead Black Flash by a half length at the finish. The latter was six lengths in the van of Miss Hutcheson, which, after dropping back, came again to beat Boston Common, which was favorite over the winner. The third straight favorite met defeat when Hasola finished third to Mrs. Rex Coopers Portmess,. and the second choice, Bag o Gold, at the termination of the one mile and one-sixteenth fifth race, which attracted a field of eight three-year-olds. Under the handling of Pete Grnoa Port-mess was kept off the pace of Singing Kid and Hasola until the final three furlongs, where Groos brought him up gradually and, taking the lead from Hasola a sixteenth of a mile from the finish, continued well to stave off, Bag o Gold, which came from far back to earn the -place award. Tight Rope, which received strong support, turned in a dull effort, after W. Gooler allowed her to drop far back after the opening quarter. JUSTIFIES CONFIDENCE. Justifying the confidence of her many backers, Mrs. M. Allens Anne Arundel was an easy winner of the opening dash, that engaged eight at six furlongs. Alamae, after showing the way to the final furlong, was second, a head in front of Thelma L., which raced best of the others. After following in the wake of Alamae, Thelma L. and Hasty Polly until reaching the stretch, Anne Arundel went to the front under W. Privetts urging and drew away to a five lengths margin at the finish. Hasty Polly, which received good support, tired badly after racing in a contending position for the opening half mile. George Collins provided the second winning favorite when the veteran Shasta Lad proved muct best of the field of eleven that accepted for the three-quartrs second race. Chutney was second and Beige third. In close attendance of the pace of Chutney and Beige until turning into the stretch, Glenn Fowler drove Shasta Lad through on the rail to take command midway of the stretch and raced into nearly a three lengths advantage at the finish. Chutney enjoyed the same margin over Beige, which held on in game fashion to best the fast-finishing Terror for the minor award. It was necessary to place Pasadena on the outside of the stalls before a start could be effected and when the field was dispatched the pack got away in ragged order. Tarpon registered his first success of the year for C. S. Stubbs when he drove to victory over a limit field of platers that con- Contbiucd on twenty-second page. ANOTHER FOR OTTIE M. Continued from first page. tested the third, at six furlongs. Title Star, a fielder, was second, with Benefit third. Coots, well backed favorite, was unable to reach contention. Taking a commanding lead in the opening quarter, Benefit continued to hold sway until reaching the stretch, where Otis Clel-land drove the winner to the front and, disposing of Benefit in the final furlong, came to the finish leading the fast-closing Title Star by three parts of a length. The latter was nearly "three lengths in front of Benefit, which easily bested Delma Dunn. Afetr furnishing early contention, One Long Hop quit. Kirby Ramsey, who has a half-dozen horses for Mrs. E. A. Carney and others, returned from his home at Louisville. Jockey R. Cooper was suspended for ten days for rough riding in the eighth race Monday. The stewards held him responsible for crowding RIcclardo during the stretch running.
