CAPITAL HANDICAP TO HYGRO Nevada Stock Farm Star Defeats Crack Band at Laurel. Regular Meeting Opens With Disqualification Luna Mica Is Set Back The . Pelican Among Winners. LAUREL, Md., Oct. 4. George Wingf ields swift running Hygro was an easy winner of the Capital Handicap here this afternoon. The son of Epinard romped home before one of the best fields of sprinters brought together during the racing year to add ,175 to his earnings. Flagstone, from the Linton Farm Stable, by a rush through the stretch, took second place by a narrow margin from George D. Wideners Jack High and Supreme Sweet, after setting a fast pace, saved third from J. P. Smiths Morfair. This was the real opening of the Maryland State Fair Association meeting, the Monday racing being for charity, and a big crowd was out for the sport, though the skies were overcast with occasional drizzles of rain during the running of the program. It was unfortunate that the meeting should have opened with a disqualification, but such was the case when in the first race Luna Mica was guilty. Hygro was ridden by George Woolf, who got the chestnut son of Epinard and Ruddy Light away well to take second place behind Supreme Sweet in the early stages. Woolf was content to allow the latter to set the pace, not making a move until approaching the stretch turn. There Hygro responded quickly when Woolf called on the Nevada colt, racing past Supreme Sweet on the inside in a few strides. Thereafter he improved his lead with each stride as Woolf took no chances. As Hygro increased his advantage in the stretch, Jack High drew away from the others and appeared to have second place won when Flagstone came with a great rush on the outside to pass the Widener veteran in the last f ew strides. Supreme Sweet tried hard to finish closer up, but tired in the final sixteenth and had to be content with fourth money. A crowd of about 8,000 persons saw the days sport, which was offered under threatening skies. Several light showers fell during the early afternoon, but the rain became a drizzle just after the running of the feature. Nose In and War Stripes both closed well through the stretch and were gaining on the leaders at the end. Jacobs Ladder had the most early speed, but The Pelican passed him on the turn to open up a clear lead. Hope to Do also was close up in the early stages, while War Stripes was next to last. Stewarts Outlaw was far back in third place, while Jack Anthony was the only other one of the six starters to finish. The race Avas marred by two casualties, Springdale Rose falling at the eighth jump ; and Revelation lost .his rider at the tenth obstacle. Outlaw and Jack Anthony were 1 far back throughout the race, only Shylock offering the winner any sort of competition. A stirring finish resulted in the fourth event, a dash of five and one-half furlongs, which attracted a dozen better grade juve- niles, with a nose victory going to. Joseph i E Wideners The Pelican over Mrs. W. C Weants Wise Anne. The two reached the I judges stand with a length and a half to spare over A. G. Vanderbilts Nose In, at j whose heels came War Stripes. i The Pelican had to be strongly ridden by Mack Garner, as Wise Anne gained on him j steadily in the stretch and just failed to catch him, although the Widener repre-, sentative forced the Weant filly out in into the middle of the track. The Audley Farms Luna Mica was dis- 1 qualified after finishing first in the opening race, which brought together a dozen maiden , juvenile fillies over the five and one-half , furlongs distance, and the race was awarded to the Glen Riddle Farms Well Built. The i latter filly, a daughter of American Flag and , Scribble, finished a length behind Luna Mica -i and a nose in front of W. R. Coes Parlance, : with Darkling fourth, another head away. Grace R. set the early pace, but gave way to Parlance at the turn into the stretch, where Well Built was In close attendance and going strong. Luna Mica moved up fast on the outside and bore over on Well Built as she passed the latter a furlong out. Just inside the sixteenth post, as he was taking the lead, Luna Mica put Parlance in close quarters, costing the Coe miss the chance to finish second. Well Builfs jockey, J. Gilbert, claimed foul, which the stewards promptly allowed. Favoring the deep track arid- saving ground on, the turns, S. A. Neilsons Flying Max easily won the third race, at a mile and a sixteenth. The race brought about the downfall of Spinach at odds-on, the former star finishing third as Drastic Delight took second place. Spinach wrested the lead from Potentate at the lower turn and held sway until the three-eighths post, where D. Bellizzi sent Flying Max into command on the inside. Thereafter Flying Max widened out his margin with Bellizzi keeping at him right to the end, where his advantage over Drastic Delight was two lengths. The latter came from well back at the head of the stretch to get the place by a similar margin over Spinach. Freshet was the same distance back in fourth position, 1 L j . v s
