NEW STEWARD AT RIVERSIDE KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 16— When Riverside Park opens its spring meeting on May 27 there will be a new presiding steward in the stand in the person of Edward K. Thornton, who is succeeding James F. Gallagher. Thornton, who in reality is a real veteran of the turf, made his first appearance in an official capacity as associate steward at Riverside Park in 1932 and was an immediate success. Thornton at one time raced a string of horses, and in later years was a partner with T. J. Pendergast in the Penthorn Stable. Originally from Kansas City, Thornton returned to his old home a few years ago from New York, where he is well known. A
