AMERICAN DERBY CANDIDATES « Trace Call and Sarada Are Considered Dangerous Contenders. ♦ Surprise Victory of Gusto In 1932 Recalled by Owners of Three-Year-Olds — Dark Horse Possibility. ♦— — All the best three-year-olds in America have been named for the Worlds Fair American Derby to be decided at Washington Park on Saturday afternoon, June 3. Last year when Burgoo King, Tick On, Osculator, Economic, Boatswain and others were in the limelight, even a fortnight before the American Derby, there were few turf critics ever dreamed that Gusto would prove the winner of the historic race. Each and every one of those mentioned went wrong in racing and training in the interim. Still, this years nominations and well meant candidates are of sufficient strength to afford a first-class contest regardless of the accidents which could befall the favorites of today. Two highly regarded three-year-olds in the expected line-up of the field in the American Derby are Trace Call and Sarada. These sterling colts were prevented from starting in the Kentucky Derby by falling ill with a slight attack of influenza on the eve of that race. Both have recovered from their slight indisposition and are in training again. The final preparation of these two colts will be over the Washington Park course. Numerous "dark horses" will be offered by smart turfmen in the next fortnight for American Derby honors. Bertrano, owned by C. B. Shaffer, master of the Coldstream Stud, in charge of the veteran trainer Frank Taylor, made his first start under colors a winning one. Bertrano was trained over the Coldstream Stud Farm track during the winter and spring and whisperings of his class caught the fancy of the bargain hunters in the future books for Kentucky Derby honors. He did not start in that fixture, however, due to the fact that he was hardly ready. He is said to be an improved three-year-old and is being pointed for the big Worlds Fair Derby. Charley O., owned by the R. M. Eastman estate, who finished third in the Kentucky Derby, is another which will have the following of many admirers of the Florida Derby winner. The brother of Mike Hall is being trained by Tommy Taylor for the American Derby. Taylor is of the opinion that Charley O. never liked the going at Churchill Downs and bases that on the fact that his distinguished brother, Mike Hall, never won at all over it.
