BELOW COST IN TRIUMPH • Dominates Running to Score Easily in Bowies Chief Offering. ♦ Formful and Interesting Racing Provided for Large Crowd Taking Advantage of Summerlike Weather. ♦ BOWIE, Md., May 19.— C. S. Bancrofts three-year-old Below Cost, a son of Bubbling Over — Belittin, raced to victory at Bowie Friday to take the measure of five others in the fourth race, a claiming affair that brought out a half-dozen starters, which was considered the best event staged on a rather off-day card. Going to the front early in the contest, Below Cost dominated the running for the entire journey to complete his triumph in rather easy fashion. At the end, under J. Renicks handling, the Bancroft colt led the way home to Mrs. M. Segals veteran Dunfern by a margin of three lengths while driving into third place and holding a like margin over P. A. Markeys Unencumbered came Mrs. W. H. Denhams Uncle Donald. Below Cost was carded to be ridden by H. Dabson, but through an unforeseen accident, J. Renick was substituted, and the racer showed an excellent turn of speed to sprint into an easy lead. Steadying his mount along carefully and withstanding an early effort from Uncle Donald, Below Cost responded readily to draw clear in the final three furlongs, and at the end was gradually increasing his advantage. Dunfern closed stoutly from a slow beginning to beat Uncle Donald by two lengths for the place, while Unencumbered was another three lengths in back of the trio to hold a wide gap over Lone Hand and Spanish. Another large gathering took advantage of the summer-like weather that prevailed, and although the card arranged was below the policy promised, there was excellent entertainment for those that journeyed to the Prince Georges course, and racing on the whole. was interesting and formful. O. D. Blanks Lodorus, the choice in the betting, turned in a neat performance to account for the first race of the day. Second honors went to J. V. Stewarts Topple. Cary T. Graysons Idle Along was third and Preston M. Burchs Scout Chief fourth. The race was at five furlongs and the first of the Maryland season for two-year-olds at a distance longer than four and one-half furlongs. First money in the second race went to Mrs. J. C. Eisenharts Lough Port, which trounced eleven other three-year-olds and over of the ,500 variety. Renewed, from J. V. Stewarts barn, was second; C. V. Whitneys Moon Shy, third, and M. Goodpasters Paddock fourth. The race was marred by a fall near the end of the back stretch, which resulted in severe injuries to Hilton "Rabbit" Dabson. This lad was up on Mrs. K. Smarts Gad-around, which appeared to bump the inside rail and go down. J. Simons Rea also fell, but W. Hileman, her rider, was unhurt. Dabson, who suffered a serious back injury about a year and a half ago and who was slightly hurt when thrown at the recent Havre de Grace meeting, was badly lacerated under the left eye, suffered a mild concussion of the brain and other injuries. He was rushed to the South Baltimore General Hospital. Mose Lowenstein scored his first victory of the Maryland season with his My Counsellor, in the third, a mile and seventy yards affair for three-year-old maidens. J. P. Jones Help Me finished second, E. R. Bradleys Broad Bill, the choice, third and P. A. Markeys Mr. Swift fourth. J. Renick took Canteret to the front at the rise of the barrier, and H. Cnn rushed Axentea up with her. These two set the pace to the three-quarters mark, where Jimmy Smith let out a notch on Broad Bill, which readily went to the front. Making the turn, Help Me moved up with Broad Bill, and My Counsellor drew up to them. The latter, nicely ridden by Johnny Gilbert, forged to the front half way down the stretch and then slowly drew away. Help Me outstayed Broad Bill for second money. a
