COLD CHECK BIG SURPRISE; ODDS BETTER THAN . 55-1 i : 1 BEATS RUBIO BY NOSE Earns Close Decision in the Cottage Grove Claiming Purse. Completes Double Bartelstein Stable and Jockey Matt First Four Races to Favorites. HOMEWOOD, 111., May 29. Cold Check completed a double for the A. Bartelstein stable, and jockey B. Matt when he scored at odds of better than 55 to 1, the longest of the meeting and by a nose over Rubio, which divided favoritism with Sobieha in the Cottage Grove Claiming Purse, at three-quarters. This was the fifth race, the sec- ondary attraction, and compose! a field of ten. Chokoloskee, also at long odds, garnered third money a length back of the two leaders and two lengths before Madwind. Although he failed to have the winner away with the leaders, Matt knew his horse and after going half the distance had him in fine stride and advancing toward the leaders. Entering the stretch, where he was in fifth place, and where Sobieha, the leader, went wide and took Rubio with her, . Matt also elected to bring the Bartelstein four-year-old out, and he straightened up for the final run in fourth position. Charging down the outside, he dropped his nose in front right at the wire. Sobieha quit badly in the closing furlong and Portcodine, the third choice, also found the leaders pace too fast after five-eighths. In one of the most thrilling finishes of the meeting, Ebony Lady, Jack Howards useful three-year-old daughter of Flying Ebony and Plum, accounted for the three-quarters Century of Progress Purse, feature of todays excellent program at Washington Park. Rushing from behind in the run through the stretch, the Howard filly dropped her head before Mr. Joe, Polydorus and Isaiah when within the shadow of the finish and at the end was only a short head before the Van Meter three-year-old, which gained the place award by a nose. Isaiah, beaten a half length by Polydorus, led Warren Jr., Cathop, Merrily On, Marooned and Camp Douglas, the field comparing with the best in the sprinting class brought together during the meeting. NARROWLY GAINED SUCCESS. Warren Wrights Dustina, making her second start and at short odds, left the maiden ranks with a narrowly gained victory over Long Bit in the five furlongs race for maiden two-year-old fillies which opened the sport. Dustina led practically from the start and for much of the trip was in decisive command. In the final eighth, however, she tired as Long Bit came on in more sturdy stride, and the two were rapidly drawing together at the end. Five lengths back Amscray scratched out third money over Abby and the five others. The winner, a bay filly by Pompey and Elvira, was ridden by C. McCrossen. In a driving finish the aged Cog-Air took the second race and the first purse of the meeting for the account of A. Bartelstein, local owner. The eight-year-old son of On Watch stubbornly resisted Gibbys Choice long enough to win by a head as Sad Knight, which earlier gave the winner a stiff argument, outlasted Sultry by a half-length for third. Clever riding was a factor in the result, and the smooth and well timed manner in which B. Matt handled the winner was of much assistance to the veteran. MATTS STRONG FINISH. Matt rated the victor close to the early pace of His Last and Sad Knight and, after driving him into a short lead, handled him strongly as he retained the advantage over the equally determined Gibbys Choice. The third race furnished a mild surprise when Bea M. was returned winner over. Field Goal, Pantaloons and nine others, including the highly regarded Mighty Atom. The winner, ridden by H. Schutte, in J. D. Weils colors, took command with a rush on the stretch turn and, continuing fast, was not in danger thereafter. At the end her margin over Field Goal was a length and one-half. The latter and Pantaloons advanced to forward places as Flashing Thru and Sym Jack dropped back after a half mile and, while unable to threaten the win- Continued on Uoenty-second page.. Parke had him under strong urging after three-eighths, Mighty Atom could not make a serious bid for one of the leading positions and during much of the race was in fifth place. Devereaux Brothers Brustigert, was the winning choice in the fourth race for two year-olds and it was his second success in as many starts here. After setting practically all the pace, Mariana bowed to the winner and at the end was a half length back. She tired badly and this aided the winner in getting up in the final strides, but the Combs filly outlasted Double Nugget, which also tired. While Mariana and Double Nugget were showing the way, well in the van of Moonsan and others, the eventual winner slowly worked his way forward, and coming to the outside, headed Double Nugget and Mariana in rapid fashion.
