FAIRfflOUNT TRACK IMPROVES St Louis Florists Are Honored With Well Filled Program Val J Scores Under Daring Ride by P PMartinez Martinez Many Recent Winners WinnersClash Clash in Feature COLLINSVILLE 111 June 20 Tuesday was set aside at Fairmount Park for the Retail Florists Association of St Louis with six of the races carrying names of flowers and the fifth the feature in which eight met honored the association The feature contested over the six furlongs route brought together Gulfelano winner of two races here Sun Thorn successful in three of his last four starts at Riverside Park Green Wave Song Hit and Run On which were winners their last times out Shirley B Mayreen and Vonnie made up the bal ¬ ance of the field fieldAlthough Although the track was soft yesterday horses preferring firm footing had their chance to earn brackets today Three of the races had capacity fields while two drew ten starters The fifth or feature and the sixth two of the best races on the card were the smallest of the day when eight starters faced the barrier in each contest contestThe The weather vas clear and much warmer than the previous day with a noticeable in ¬ crease in attendance All ladies were pre ¬ sented with flowers as they entered the gates a gift from the florists floristsTen Ten twoyearold maidens and winners of one race met in the first race at four and onehalf furlongs and the winner was fur ¬ nished by Escoba Stock Farm when Peach tree an outsider in the betting defeated the favorite Linchpin in easy fashion with Jimmy N second choice in the betting a close third thirdLinchpin Linchpin held up the start by breaking through several times and when the start came he was first to leave the gate and showing high speed beat his opponents to the first turn and was in front by a length with Peachtree following and Margies Doll third Entering the stretch Peachtree took the lead and Linchpin dropped back sud ¬ denly with Margies Doll racing in second place In the final drive J W Frye had a good hold of the winner when he went un ¬ der the wire a length in advance of his opponents with Linchpin coming again to save second place a neck before Jimmy N and the latter a half length in front of Margies Doll to save the show showMrs Mrs S G Thorns False Piety was another surprise winner in the second race when she earned an easy victory over Polaire Red Vest and nine other threeyearolds and over at five and onehalf furlongs The win ¬ ner had the services of G Miller and he handled the daughter of St Henry well He allowed Big Lady to make the early pace while having a good hold of his mount and when ready went by the early pacemaker easily pulling up with a length and a half advantage at the finish Polaire gained a nose verdict for the place from Red Vest VestThe The third straight favorite met defeat when Val J given a daring ride by appren ¬ tice P Martinez got home an easy winner over Big Blue with Shift heading the seven others at the end of the six furlongs furlongsVal Val J breaking from an inside post po ¬ sition moved up rapidly on the rail going down the back stretch and squeezed through a narrow opening rounding the far turn to take command Once in the lead he con ¬ tinued to improve his advantage until he was three lengths before Big Blue at the finish with the latter two lengths ahead of Shift
