Here and There on the Turf Cavalcade Finally Loses Discov May Have Run Race in Workout Watch Out for Dark Secret i iBurgoo Burgoo King Done With Racing A group of us were gathered around a chattering telegraph instrument listening to the running of the Detroit Derby The calls came In telling about Mata Hari and Bien Fait leading the way which was not surprising as Cavalcade and Discovery were not expected in the report until the field had reached the stretch The horses arrived at the final straightaway but no word was forthcoming of Cavalcade and Discovery Then came the in the stretch call but still no mention of our two heroes It looked very black for the champion and his straight man or stooge or what have you The man at the instrument looked up and said Here comes the winner There was breathless silence for a moment then the magic words Cavalcade wins winsThat That brought forth a very audible sigh of relief as Cavalcades defeat would have been very hard to take Plight is second the man with the trained ear said That was something of a surprise to us Wheres Discovery was the one thought with all of us No sooner had we asked the question of ourselves th n came the voice of the operator New Deal is third Discovery was unplaced in the Detroit Derby and it was a blow to us all because we had come to regard Cavalcade and Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts colt as inseparable as a worlds fair visitor and his cane caneDiscovery Discovery having failed to follow on the heels of Cavalcade as in the Chesapeake Stakes Kentucky Derby Preakness and American Derby it was natural that an interested person should wait eagerly for the chart to learn what happened to the son of Display But the chart only showed that he had finished next to last Now comes the statement of Bud Stotler that Discov ¬ ery did not like the Detroit track and climbed throughout the running of the Derby What the Maryland horseman had to say is to be considered with great thought as Stotler is not given to uttering inconse ¬ quential words wordsHowever However the thought of Discoverys work ¬ out at Belmont Park where he stepped a mile and onequarter in 203 in prepara ¬ tion for the Detroit special brought up the idea that he had left his race in that trial It has happened so often in the past when a horse showed so much speed in a workout that he was dull and listless in his race Whether this can be regarded as a cause for Discoverys poor effort is a matter of conjecture as it must be considered that the Belmont and Detroit ovals are anything but alike also that Stotler would not have attributed the colts defeat to climbing unless he believed it so At any rate the conclusion must oe drawn that Cavalcade has looked Discovery in the eye too often for the latterV peace of mind J James Fitzsimmons smart as he Is took Dark Secret out of the Queens County Han ¬ dicap in which he had to carry 126 pounds to run in another race in which the Flying Ebony veterans impost was 119 pounds both affairs being at one mile Dark Secret was beaten two lengths by Deduce the mile be ¬ ing run in 138 and Singing Wood cap ¬ tured the Queens County in138 so from the speed chart angle the Wheatley Stable star would hot have done much better in the handicap In either case however his defeat is not to be taken seriously because he is a horse that proved last year that his first start was not his best What he does in the immediate future may indicate what kind of a horse he will be this year Last season he started out by running third in the Brookdale Handicap but thereafter he was one of the kingpins of his division divisionJust Just when Burgoo Kinf had gained a position where he was being considered in handicap reckonings the 1932 Kentucky r Derby winner bowed a tendon which while sad news was not wholly unexpected Any Continued on twentysixth page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page patchedup horse as was the son of Bub ¬ bling Over and Minawand can be expected to give way sooner or later even though the patchingup had been done with the violet ray treatment Burgoo King prob ¬ ably will never race again as it took Dick Thompson and several veterinary experts two years to get him ready for his come ¬ back this spring What with most of his other horses coughing Thompson will not be heard of very much for a while with his division of the Bradley stable
