OPEN RANGE SCORES AGAIN Defeats Faireno and Dark Winter in Aqueducts Headliner Horses Make Fast Time Over New York YorkTrack Track Despite Top Surface of ofSloppy Sloppy Mud NEW YORK N Y June 19 W Gra ¬ hams Open Range the fast running son of Phalaros and Mazetta was winner of the best offering of the Queens County Jockey Club at Aqueduct today when he splashed home in the Belle Harbor Handicap On the scale the threeyearold was top weight and readily took the measure of William Woodwards Faireno Willis Sharpe Kilmers Dark Winter and Thomas L Orussos Jimmy Sutro SutroThe The heavy rains Monday night and this morning completely flooded the track but there was a hard bottom and while the mud was splashing all afternoon the time was faster than when the going is dry A heavy rain pounds down the top dress ¬ ing and invariably brings a comparative fast track at Aqueduct The unpleasant weather conditions had some effect on the attend ¬ ance but a good crowd was out and as the day wore on there was no rain to bother the crowd crowdIn In the sprint handicap the only one of the quartet that had not shown good mud running form was Jimmy Sutro and as expected he finished last of the lot Open Range under 105 pounds was the light weight in point of actual weight carried but on the scale he was giving away six pounds to Dark Winter and eight pounds to Faireno while Jimmy Sutro was in re ¬ ceipt of twenty pounds poundsDark Dark Winter caused some delay at the post by his refusal to go into his stall and when the start came he left fast but Lit zenberger sprinted away with Open Range until he was safely in the lead at the end of the first furlong Afer taking command the threeyearold was permitted to step right along until he was two lengths clear and galloping easily easilyFaireno Faireno held second place and in his ef ¬ forts to catch the Graham gelding drew away from Dark Winter while Jimmy Sutro was badly outrun from the start It proved a fruitless chase for Faireno He gained some ground as the stretch was reached and a furlong from the finish he was at the heels of the Graham gelding but he could get no closer and then Open Range drew away again to be a winner by a length and a half halfAfter After Rigan McKinney scratched Black ¬ cock from the Helter Skelter Steeplechase over the short course there were only three left to race but it brought a good contest with J Frederic Byers Heather the winner over J Howard Lewis Snake Charmer M B Metcalf Jrs The Graf the other starter went down three jumps from home when a close contender but was remounted to finish for third thirdClarence Clarence Buxton saddled a smart sort in the opening five furlongs dash for plater juveniles when he sent J P Louchheims Morpluck to the post The son of Morvich after getting away slowly came with a rush to win going away Thomas B Gays Canterboy raced to second place with Willis Sharpe Kilmers Prince Comixa taking third from easilyPrince Mantados rather easily Prince Comixa and Canterboy set all the pace while Morpluck was many lengths back of thery and at the turn of the course he still appeared to be hopelessly out of contention Then the leading pair began to tire and Prince Comixa was first to tire As he shortened strides Canterboy drew away slightly but at the same time Morpluck dashed up on the outside and right at the end he raced past to win going away by a length and a half halfThere There came a claim of foul after the run ¬ ning of the third another five furlongs dash for twoyearolds when Pascuma after fin ¬ ishing second to Dr J P Jones Air Line lodged a complaint against Don Meade who rode the winner After the patrol judges had made a report on the running the claim was not allowed Third in this went to Mrs S B Masons Evasive EvasiveEarly Early in the action Treasury Key found her way into the lead and Air Line was well back of her and in trouble Then after making the turn the Jones gelding began to make up ground rapidly while Evasive also came into the battle battleAir Air Line had the outside position in ffie drive to the finish and there did not seem to be any good reason for the complaint of Pascuma when the son of Trojan drew away at the end to be winner by a length and a half halfFor For the Empire City Handicap there were 36 named and the list includes both Equi ¬ poise and Dark Secret The Knickerbocker Handicap attracted 37 good ones and there were 38 named for the Yonkers Handicap The other fixture the Eastview for two yearolds was the most popular on the list with 67 named namedTrainer Trainer James Fitzsimmons reported that he has many horses on the shelf due to the coughing epidemic
