SMEAR DISAPPOINTS BACKERS Princess A 0 Accounts for Best Race on Latonias Program Close Finish Thrills Crowd Despite Absence Absenceof of Well Backed Choice Among AmongContenders Contenders LATONIA Ky June 19 The program r h Latonia Tuesday was given over entirely to the cheaper class of selling platers and in the absence of anything better the sixth race dignified with a name the Worthville Purse answered for a feature Though the weather was ideal and the track nearly fast there was little in a racing line to attract j j patrons and the crowd dropped off appre ¬ ciably ciablyThe The Worthville Purse developed both a close finish and a keen disappointment Princess A O owned by C Ortlieb de ¬ feated Left Wing by a head for the purse while the disappointment was the failure of Smear an oddson favorite to get any part of the prize Poor judgment on the part of D Taylor accounted for Smears failure failurePrincess Princess A O under a hustling ride by G South was close up from the start and at the eighth post drew up alongside of j Left Wing which had just taken command i I The two fought it out head and head to the finish with the former getting the judges decision decisionLeft Left Wing in turn finished a half length in front of Ridge Blond which got third place by a head headSmear Smear away slowly reached contention at the head of the stretch There Taylor made the mistake of trying to get through the few horses in front of him instead of going outside with the result that he was hemmed in from the eighth post to the finish with no chance to run The winner paid 6580 for 2 2The The Cattell Stables Empress Wu ac ¬ counted for the opening race in easy fash ¬ ion when she beat a band of cheaper two yearolds over five and a half furlongs j Continued on nineteenth page SMEAR DISAPPOINTS BACKERS Continued from first page Golden Throne finished second and Athan ette third Golden Throne raced to the front after going a quarter and at the head of the stretch seemed to have the race at his mercy but he had still to reckon with Empress Wu which under the able han ¬ dling of R Yelton came on to win going away by more than two lengths Golden Throne was easily the best of the others beating Athanette by five lengths lengthsMission Mission Clock had some early speed but quit to a walk in the home stretch stretchSue Sue Terry owned by M M Riddle took the second race and paid her backers the liberal mutuels of 4580 for 2 Racing the first part of it under restraint though close to the leaders Sue Terry took command shortly after entering the stretch and won off by herself by nearly four lengths Delma Dunn and Thunder Lou divided the pacemaking job and after being headed Delma Dunn had enough left to be second Thunder Lou dropped back Flat Rock mov ¬ ing up to be third Flat Rock might have been a more serious threat but had to pull up shortly after the start and then race wide wideO O A Bianchi saddled his first winner of the meeting when War Pledge a strapping son of Crusader proved better than Mur pheys Luck when in a gruelling finish which engaged the pair through the final threesixteenths the victor obtained the de ¬ cision by a head The successful duo at ¬ tracted the bulk of support and closed al ¬ most equal choices Hepseys Beau which finished the course in third place gave a splendid performance to earn that part of the purse when he came from a good dis ¬ tance back to finish in the thick of the fight being but a length back of the first two twoThe The stable of Mrs Bessie Franzheim which has not been able to make an entry since early in the meeting because of ill ¬ ness of the horses won the fourth race with Virginella a twoyearold filly by Eternal Kimax making her first start This miss overlooked in the betting took command early and at the end of five and a half furlongs was leading her nearest rival Go bet by two and a half lengths Pokeaway was third thirdThe The aged Cayuga from the Shady Brook Farm was backed down to prohibitive odds in the fifth race and his supporters never had a moments worry The nineyearold gelding went to the front shortly after the start and never was as much as threatened Turning into the home stretch he was eight lengths to the good and he won by six sixLandover Landover slow to begin finished well to take place money while third place fell to Pony Up Balsite and Final Fling each had a try at catching the leader in the first half mile but both of them quit badly in the stretch
