CAVALCADE ON EDGE ♦ — — -— — Triple Derby Winner Ready for Championship Race Saturday. « Works Mile aud a Quarter in 2 : 08 % Over Sloppy Track — New Deal Starter in the Classic. ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, 111., July 10.— "Whatever horse stops Cavalcade from gaining undisputed possession of the three-year-old championship in the Arlington Classic Saturday will have to be a great thoroughbred," Robert A. Smith, trainer of the Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloane triple Derby winner, said this morning after he had given the colt his final preparations for Arlington Parks 5,000 special to be run Saturday. Showing the same f rictionless action which has carried him to five brilliant victories this season, Cavalcade went the full Classic distance of one mile and a quarter in sloppy going in 2:08%. The English-bred son of Lancegaye — Hastily was under strong re-staint throughout his long trial. NEVER UNDER PRESSURE. Coming out on the track late in the morning when the course was deserted, Cavalcade began his workout in front of the stand. Moving into his stride quickly he went along at a steady pace while being held several yards off the rail. He completed the first half mile in :50 and went to the three-quarters in 1:15%. The mile was covered in 1:40%, the mile and a furlong in 1:54%, and the full distance in 2:08%. At no time was he under pressure. Not only was trainer Smith highly satisfied with the performance, but it struck a convincing chord with the several other horsemen and dockers privileged to witness the workout. They were all agreed that the horse that beats the Brookmeade Stable star in the Classic will have every right to claim the three-year-old championship. That James W. Parrish, Kentucky banker, will be represented in Saturdays attraction, which promises to attract a record-breaking crowd to Arlington Park, was indicated this morning when his New Deal was asked for a speed effort over the mile and a quarter distance. The son of Broadway Jones and Ethel Dear was timed the distance in 2:10% after having gone the half in :50%, three-quarters in 1:16%, and the mile in 1:42%. NEW DEAL QUALIFIED. New Deal was a fast closing second to Mata Hari in the Illinois Derby at a mile and a furlong, and several weeks ago he accounted for the Enquirer Handicap at Latonia. He also finished third in the Detroit Derby after having taken the lead at the furlong pole. New Deal may have as a running mate in the Classic. Howard, which ran second in the Latonia Derby. Discovery, Alfred G. Vanderbilts big chestnut colt that stepped back into the fight for the three-year-old championship by beating the best older horses in America in the Brooklyn Handicap last week, took his final trial over the mile and a quarter of the Classic route between the second and third races this afternoon. With his regular rider, John Joe Bejshak, in the saddle. Discovery was caught in 2:11%, breezing, over the sloppy track. A short blower Friday will complete his conditioning for Saturdays 5,000 added Classic. Under a tight hold, which did not permit him to extend himself at any stage of the move, Discovery breezed his first quarter in :27 and was at the half in :52%, after a second quarter in :25% that was ihe best of the trial. He was at the three-quarters in 1:19%, the mile in 1:15%, and the mile and a furlong in 1:58%.
