SMALLMAN SCORES A DOUBLE Golden Fate Wins Main Race at Fort Erie for London Sportsman — Favorites Fare Well. FT. ERIE, Ont., July 10.— J. E. Smallmans swift running sprinter, Golden Fate, captured major honors in the Fred Westbrook Purse, an allowance affair for the better class sprinters which served as the principal offering at the Fort Erie course of the Niagara Racing Association here today. A winner of but one other race during the present Canadian season, the four-year-old son of The Satrap turned in a sparkling speed test to decisively defeat six others that opposed him over the six furlongs journey, to run the distance in 1:115. Chasing the winner closest at the end of the journey was the Stuart Stables consistent Miss Monoa, while W. F. Morrisseys chestnut sprinter. Golden Spur, took the short end when he led home . Crout au Pot, Prince Fox, Herowin and Flaxen. Jockey R. Watson was astride the winner, which, incidentally, effected a double for the London, Ontario, owner. In earning his second triumph Golden Fate showed that he was in a running mood when he took the lead when the start came. Watson, however, was content to take his mount under restraint when Madeley rushed Miss Monoa to the front and the pair went along just before Golden Spur, while the others remained in rather close formation at the heels of the trio. Given his head before the turn was reached, Golden Fate soon took a good lead and thereafter held sway to reach the finish showing the way by three lengths. Miss Monoa stuck to her w task gamely to land second place by a length and one-half while Golden Spur maintained a similar margin over Crout au Pot. While there was some crowding during the running in which Crout au Pot was the victim of poor racing luck, the race brought the large crowd to its feet. Another day of mid-summer weather prevailed and the afternoon saw favorites in the limelight.
