IDENTIFY WINS AT EMPIRE CITY ♦ Coucci Guides Schwartz Racer to Victory Over Balios. • Ideal Racing Conditions Lure Big Crowd to Popular Yonkers Course — Celiba Earns Purse. ♦ NEW YORK, N. Y„ July 12— Morton L. Schwartz Identify, under a hustling ride by Silvio Coucci, was winner of the best offering of the Empire City Racing Association at the track on the hill today. It was a mile and seventy yards race that attracted an excellent field, and it was Henry L. Ingle-bachs Balios that raced to second place, with J. H. Louchheims Economic, starting for the first time in two years, just beating H. C. Phipps Cleves for third. The card that was topped by this feature was an interesting one, and racing conditions were ideal, with the usual large crowd out to cheer the winners. Little time was lost at the post in the Identify race, and as the five that were engaged left the stalls, Coucci went out at once to force the pace with Identify. He urged the son of Man o War around the first turn, and when the back stretch was reached took a slight hold of his head. Economic was racing closely after him, and Horn had the son of Infinite under steady restraint as he held his position. Balios and Pompeius followed these, with the first named on the inside and racing well within himself. As the field turned from the back stretch those back of Identify appeared to be going so easily that his chance did not seem particularly bright, but before the stretch was reached Coucci shook him up to steal away slightly, and as they turned into the stretch Horn went to a drive on Economic. Balios was outside of the pair, and Merritt delayed his drive to the final quarter. When called on, Balios responded gamely, but Coucci had saved something for the challenge and was winner by half a length. Balios had beaten Economic only a head, and Cleves came with a determined rush that saw him just another head back of these. Pompeius weakened badly after a flash of speed and was a poor last. It is possible that Economic will improve over this showing. It was an excellent race for a first effort in two years, and he came out of the race apparently perfectly sound. Cheap maiden juveniles met in the opening five furlongs dash and it brought a close finish when J. P. Jones Communist was just up in the closing strides to nose out J. J. Robinsons Treasury Key. Back of these, G. Hamiltons Judge Blake beat Rivalry for third. There was some delay at the post and during one of his lunges Fur Fibre fell with Horn, but both horse and rider escaped injury. The start was a bad one and Tar-bucket was knocked out of it before fairly under way. Communist was away well while Treasury Key broke slowly but was rushed up by Pascuma until she was showing the way at the first furlong mark. Pascuma went right along with Treasury Key but the use made of her speed to take a position, took its toll and at the end she tired while Communist, racing forwardly all the way was up to win by a nose. Judge Blake and Rivalry fought it out for third but they were two lengths back of the Robinson filly. Mrs. E. A. Burkes Polytude was winner of the second, another race for two-year-olds, and over the five and a half furlongs route. She scored over Mrs. Louise Viaus Bull Fighter and the Greentree Stables Bas-quine saved third from Tudor Queen. The start was a good one, and Bull Fighter, showing an excellent turn of speed, was the one to go out in the lead. Basquine had left her stall in the front division, but she was almost at once in trouble to be knocked back badly. Merry Bud was first to take up the chase of Bull Fighter, but she soon gave way to Polytude, and when Gilbert had the winner within easy striking distance of the leader, he took a slight hold of her head. In the stretch Polytude, under a vigorous ride, ran down Bull Fighter to win going away by a length and a half. Bull Fighter was doing his best to save second place by a neck from Basquine, which finished going strongly after her early misfortune. Tudor Queen was lapped closely on her to take fourth. There came another fighting finish in the five and three-quarters furlongs of the third. This engaged a cheap band, and W. E. Jones Celiba battled it out to win over Baby Chard, one that raced for George Boehle, with Troboy, from the Geneseo Stable, starting for the first time in a year, a close third. This one was one of the hot tips of the afternoon. Baby Chard was the one to rush out in front from a poor start, and she dominated the race to the closing strides. True Romance chased after her, and Troboy was out-footing the others, while Celiba was far back. In the stretch Celiba came with a determined rush, and, outgaming Baby Chard, was the winner by half a length. Baby Chard had lasted to beat Troboy a head, and True Romance tired to be fourth, another length away. Big Boots met with some interference in this race, and the others were never able to get to a really contending position. It was one of the cheapest fields seen in New York racing this season. Four horses came to the finish of the fifth closely lapped and the decision went to James P. Donigans Landsman over Fresh-air from the Ascot Stable, and third was awarded to Mrs. E. A. Burkes Crooked Lane with J. V. Stewarts Mad Eagle another head back. This was a dash of five and three-quarter furlongs and the second of the day, the association having taken advantage of the rule amendment that made two such races possible on the same program. It was a good start and Lady Merman was first to show but she did not last long and as she dropped back she was shuffled completely out of contention. Freshair then took up the burden of the pace but he was never able to draw away from Landsman and at the end there was a general closing up with Landsman just dropping his head down in front.
