SCAN HAWTHORNE OFFICIALS » Business Mens Racing Association Submits List to. Commission. Several Important Changes in Official Family—Electric Eye to Be Tested Next Sunday. The schedule of stakes and purses for the Hawthorne race meeting of thirty days, which opens July 30, as well as a roster of officials, with several important changes in the official family at the west side course, has "been placed before the Illinois Racing Commission, and that bodys stamp of approval is expected over the week-end. Meanwhile such plans for the meeting as do not require the commissions sanction are going forward, and by Monday it is expected that horses from outside race tracks will begin to arrive at Hawthorne. One of the most important innovations that will be seen this year at Hawthorne — famous for many seasons for its introduction of racing novelties — is the electric eye. This innovation, an infra-red ray that reduces the timing of races down to thousandths of a second, will make its American debut at the Hawthorne meeting. Such of the racing regulars as are curious as to the method of its operation will be given an opportunity to observe the electric eye in operation no later than next Sunday, when a public test will be made in the running of three races at the west side track. The introduction of the electric eye will mean that the time registered in races at Hawthorne will once more be lined up with the time figures from other tracks. Veterans will recall that several seasons back, when Hawthorne initiated the electric chronometer for timing races, it became necessary to move the stall gate, up to the actual Continued on twentieth page. j SCAN HAWTHORNE OFFICIALS Continued from first page. starting point of races. At other tracks, where timing is still done by the stop watch, races are started from a point some seventy feet back of the actual distance run, and the dockers snap their watches when the flag man dips his red flag as the field passes the starting point. This year the starting gate at Hawthorne will not be connected with the electric chronometer, and the gate can be moved back as far as at other tracks. The chronometer will be started by an infra-red ray at the actual starting point of the race. ■
