One of the steadiest-going juveniles seen on the American tracks last season was the gelding Try Sympathy, belonging to the Fair Fields Stable of Mrs. Willis Sharpe Kilmer. Although not a winner of one of the more important stakes for two-year-olds, Try Sympathy gave ample evidence of his quality during his campaign, which saw him reach the post fifteen times and be returned victorious upon five occasions. Try Sympathys most notable triumph was in the Hyde Park Stakes at Arlington Park, but in several of his other races he uncovered very pleasing performances. He gained first honors in two other features besides the Hyde Park, taking the Juvenile and Woodward Stakes at Detroit, and was second in the St. Clair at the Motor City course and in the Flash Stakes at Saratoga. He also was third in the Aberdeen Stakes at Havre de Grace and the Kindergarten at Bowie. The son of Tryster Simpatica, by Friar Rock was a winter development, making his first start in January at Hialeah Park, where he was beaten a half length by Abner in a dash of three furlongs. In two other such sprints at that course he exhibited fair speed, but the finish found him fifth on both occasions. His graduation victory was scored in his fourth start, which was over the half-mile course at Tropical Park and came after he had led from the start. Running the distance in :47, he defeated Beginners Bait, Overstimulate and other ordinary youngsters. Try Sympathys only start at Bowie was in the Kindergarten, and he followed the pace closely and held on well to take third honors back of Angelic and No Saint. The Fair Fields youngster displayed the same kind of effort in the Aberdeen, as he finished back of Stainforth and Psychic Bid. He led home a dozen other promising juveniles in the race. After a brief rest, the son of Tryster resumed campaigning at Detroit, where he was slightly beaten by Phildia and Scrambled Eggs in an allowance affair. About this time, Try Sympathy began hitting his stride, and in his next start, the St. Clair Stakes, he forced Phildia to run five furlongs in :59 to defeat him less than a length, following it up with an effort in an allowance race over the same route which he ran in :59 to easily defeat Fort Springs and other fair youngsters. Then in the Woodward Stakes he lead all the way to handily defeat Phildia and others, repeating a few days later in the Juvenile, in which his beaten company included Phildia, Polish Beau and McCarthy. His time for the Woodward was :59 and for the Juvenile :59. Shipped to Arlington Park for the Hyde Park Stakes, Try Sympathy came through in smashing fashion to triumph by three lengths over Hasty Glance, with Albuquerque third and other good two-year-olds. He ran the five and a half furlongs in 1:05. With a months rest, Try Sympathy made a bid for the Flash Stakes at Saratoga, going into the sprint under top weight of 125 pounds. Taking the lead at the start, he set a steady pace, only to be nipped in the final stride by Fitter Pat, to which he was conceding fifteen pounds. Supreme Court and Polar Flight, both capable colts, were third and fourth in the field of ten. In the United States Hotel Stakes the Fair Fields gelding lacked his customary dash, but he showed an even effort to be fifth among the ten starters, as Balladier gained chief honors, with Today second and Polar Flight third. It was decided to give him a rest with the Hopeful Stakes in view and he did not start again until that race at six and a half furlongs, which was four weeks later. Unable to show his customary early speed, Try Sympathy worked his way up slowly but steadily and was seventh at the finish. As in the United States Hotel, he carried 124 pounds and gave weight to most of his opponents. It was then decided to retire him for the season. Try Sympathy is by Tryster, which has not gained much of a reputation for producing stayers, but the Kilmer gelding is from Simpatica, which previously had foaled a good performer in Starpatic. Fourth dam of Try Sympathy was The Niece, dam of the good horse Uncle. Try Sympathy probably will not be an outstanding three-year-old, but he may cause much trouble for the top-notchers.
