LATONIA OPENS SATURDAY Increased Purses Attracting More and Better Horses for Meeting. m Eight Major Stakes-and Handicaps Headed by 5,000 Latonia Derby to Bring Out Stars of Respective Divisions. LATONIA, Ky., May 21. With a successful meeting at Churchill Downs ended, the racing scene in Kentucky shifts to Latonia, where Saturday there begins a thirty-seven day spring and early summer season. With purses increased, with more horses expected than in many years and the return of a semblance of prosperity, Latonia officals are looking forward to one of the best meetings in the history of the Covington track. Charles Nolte, track superintendent, estimated that more than 200 horses already are quartered at the track and he expects the accommodations for 900 to be taxed to their capacity by the end of the week or the beginning of next. In addition to those either arrived or due from Louisville, the racing colony is being augmented by stables coming out of winter quarters and some from other racing points. The increased size of purses has attracted many horsemen who heretofore have headed in other directions, and indications are that racing patrons in this area will be offered sport of the highest caliber. Eight major stakes and handicaps, headed by the 5,000 added Latonia Derby, are down for decision, and these, too, have been subscribed to liberally. For the first time in- several years a division of the E. R. Bradley stable will campaign at Latonia. Eight representing the popular Kentucky sportsman arrived at the Covington plant Tuesday morning in charge of D. T. Heisel. Two of them, Beginners Bait and Brown Eyed Pat, are three-year-olds, while the others are two-year-olds. The juveniles are Bust Anybody, Bombastic, Bold Bid, Bird of Blue, Behind Me and Binocular. Among- other large stables either here or due within the next few days are those of Dan Lehan, J. T. Weaver, Dixiana, Pen-villa Farm, C. W. Bidwell, W. G. Sparks, R. L. Stivers, Tommy Murray, C. H. Ferguson, Devereaux Brothers, R. L. Baker, Mose Goldblatt, F. P. Letellier, J. S. Riley, J. P. Jones, Lon Johnson, J. W. Parrish, Shady Brook Farm, William Crump, Howard Continued on twenty-sixth page. I : J " 1 j j ; : 1 , i LATONIA OPENS SATURDAY Continued from first page. Oots, R. W. Pearce, Jesse Spencer and R. Reeves. Besides these there were numerous other smaller strings which include useful campaigners. For the first time in years Latohias official family will be together; Heretofore Latonia has been running in opposition to Washington Park, and the racing group has been split. Charles F. Price, veteran racing; official, will be presiding steward and will be assisted by C. Bruce Head, Sam McMeekin and Elijah Hogge, associate stewards. The placing judges will be W. H. Shelley, Sherman Goodpaster and H. B. Lindenberger. Shelley also is the track handicapper and racing secretary, while Lindenberger alsd will fill the role of clerk of scales. James T. Clark will be the patrol Judge, Larry Boganschutz and Fred Burton entry clerks; William Hamilton the starter, and Thomas Oliphant and Dr. S. A. Bradley paddock judges. As for the track and racing plant Itself,, everything is in readiness or will be made so within the next few days for the opening Saturday. The rains have done much for the track and will need only a few dry days to put it in perfect condition. Rain also has worked wonders with the shrubbery and landscape. Russell Sweeney, resident manager, said Tuesday that much interest has been evinced in the coming meeting, and reported a heavy" demand for reservations for Derby Day, June 1. Colonel Winn, now in Chicago, will be , here Friday morning to assume charge of the meeting.
