Here and There on the Turf Omaha Bated Over Cavalcade Some Chance of Going in Suburban Illinois Derby Gains Interest Azucar Training Well Again .... ....-..-.--.-.....--.-...4 John B. Campbell, New Yorks new racing secretary and handicapper, has a mind of his own and uses it,-especially when it comes to bringing horses to the finish in a mad scramble. In his imposts for the Suburban Handicap, which promises to be one of the great races of the season, Campbell rates Omaha a two-pound better colt than Cavalcade over a mile and a quarter distance. The outstanding three-year-old was assigned 110 i pounds, two more than scale, whereas Cav- j alcades weight of 127 pounds is according to the official set. James Fitzsimmons, developer of Omaha for William Woodward, has intimated that the son of Gallant Fox and Flambino might run in the Suburban and if this should be the case Belmont Park or any other New York course could never hope for an event more attractive. Even without Omaha, the Suburban will be a magnet for patrons, what with King Saxon and Discovery certain to be opponents of Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloanes great thoroughbred. To expect Omaha to take a chance with older horses at this time of the year, when he has so many important specials in his own class just ahead, is a matter not entertained by hardened observers, but Fitzsimmons knows his horses and he will not permit the three-year-old star to run in the Suburban unless he is quite sure in his own mind that the Derby-Preakness winner not only will handle himself satisfactorily, but will come out of the engagement, barring accident,, well able to continue with his schedule. The odds are, however, that Omaha will not go in the Suburban, which is offered five days after the Withers, a mile dash attracting him Saturday, but will await the richer Belmont Stakes. The latter mile and a half special appears a pick-up for him. It comes nine days after the Suburban. Even though Omaha probably will not accept in the Suburban, much conversation has been created by Campbells weights for the race. Who had the slightest thought during the winter that any horse would be handicapped ahead of Cavalcade? If last seasons three-year-old champion returns to competition as he left off with the Classic, he should be able to turn back Discovery, King Saxon and the others he will be called upon to meet in the Suburban. Trainer Robert A. Smith is expected to have Cavalcade under silks in the next few days in preparation for the Memorial Day event and that should tighten him up for a sharp struggle in the 0,000 race. The Belmont rle and a quarter course is made to order ; for a horse of Cavalcades type with its series of straightaways for about three-quarters and leading into a wide, sweeping turn. Thats where the son of Lancegaye and Hastily, by Hurry On, will make his run. Campbell was so impressed with King Saxons Metropolitan Handicap victory, in which the C. H. Knebelkamp colt received nine pounds from Discovery, that he has made the impost on the former one pound Continued on ninth page. Discovery loses four pounds from what he carried in the Metropolitan and gets into the Suburban with, 123 pounds. This differ- ence in weights, .may have some effect on determining the exact status of the two colts. The writer believes it will cause Discovery to be. held at a lower, quotation cin the Suburban wagering than the remarkable King Saxon, as yet an untried horse beyond the middle distances.-4 But anyway you look at it, the Suburban smacks of a very tasty morsel, one that should jam Belmont Park, large as it is. With eastern racing fans looking forward to seeing such worthy three-year-olds as Omaha, Plat Eye. and Rosemont running in the Withers Stakes Saturday western enthusiasts, especially those in the Chicago district, are getting ready to view a renewal of the Illinois Derby, whose 0,000 added purse will bring together Roman Soldier, Whiskolo, Sun Portland, Blackbirder, Prince Splendor and others. Although training at nearby Washington Park, and eligible to the Aurora feature, Black Helen is a doubtful starter. A dark horse appeared for the Illinois Derby Monday, when Mrs. J. C. Gillems Transmutable stepped five and one-half furlongs in 1:04, working out to seven furlongs in 1:25. Transmutables time for the shorter distance is within four-fifths of a Iron Masks worlds record, so it is quite evident that the son of Transmute and Chickie, by Chicle, a recent development, is a possessor of quite some speed. His class will be put to the question on Friday. Roman Soldier, idle since the Kentucky Derby but now being brought back to a. keen edge after a brief rest, is likely to rule favorite for the Illinois Derby. Not far behind him, however, may be Whiskolo, which finished second behind the Sachsen-maier and Reuter colt in the Texas Derby and third back, of him in the Kentucky Derby. Mrs Silas B. Masons Sun Portland, re-, cently acquired, is another due for strong support, because of his smart performance in the East a short time ago. Should Black Helen start, which she could do very easily, being in fine fettle, the post of- favoritism probably would swing to her as she holds a decisive verdict over Roman Soldier in the Florida Derby. Azucar, victorious in the Santa Anita Handicap but idle since then because, of too much ceremony after the running of the 00,000 event, is going along smoothly in his training, judging" by His1 trial of 1:16 for three-quarters at Detroit Sunday. His effort was in public and he went over thg ground In willingvfashion. The Irish-bred veteran is ijeing.. groomed .for the Detroit Challenge Cup, Avhicn -probably would not have been arranged but f or Azucara victory in the Santa; Anita Handicap. He is owned by Fred Alger, Jr., prominent Detroit sportsman and a leading supporter of racing at the Fair Grounds course there. Alger arranged the conditions for this event in conjunction with the owners" of : Cavalcade and Discovery and all three of the horses can be . .expected4 to start because of the sporting significance pi the race.
