MUD, RAIN AND SNOW PREVAIL Conditions Practically Halt Training Work at Churchill Downs. Trainer Sherrill Ward Sends Wise Duke One Mile in 1:51 Despite Weather and Track. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 3. Mud, rain, snow flurries and a thermometer which hovered around the freezing mark held training activities to a virtual standstill, but they did not prevent trainer Sherrill Ward from getting his programmed trial with H. H. Hectors Kentucky Derby hopeful, Wise Duke. The son of Wise Counsellor was scheduled for a test at one mile. Breaking at the stands, he ploughed through the sloppy mud in 1:51. He was unaccompanied and under restraint throughout, reaching the first quarter in :274,n, half in :55 and the six furlongs in 1:23. Another candidate to negotiate a mile was Mrs. J. L. Carricks Watercure. The move was anything but satisfactory to trainer George Morris inasmuch as the son of Brilliant refused to extend himself and was going at little better than a two-minute lick. Watercure went in company with Gray Jack, and the pair was tabbed in 1:55 for the mile. Lawyer Brigade, from the stable of Mrs. R, J. Murphy, Evansville, Ind., patron, showed ; he is not averse to the off-footing, breezing three-quarters in 1:18 in company with Terpon. Units continued to arrive from southern points, Kirby Ramsey and A. P. "Doc" Lloyd registering from Miami, and Jack Webber coming from Hot Springs. Ramseys troupe included Crowning Glory, Big Gawk and Bay Memory, which race for the account of C. L. Croan, Louisville sportsman, and Mucho Gusto, John Tio, Airforce, Celiba and Reelaway, which race for Mrs. Ramsey. Former jockey Carlos Legnon accompanied the shipment. Lloyd brought in six head the property of H. Friedberg, Louisville tobacco merchant, and Wowo, a two-year-old owned by Mrs. Lloyd. The Friedberg runners are the two-year-olds Tobacco Buyer, Five Sisters and Sister Fan, and the older horses Baby Vivia, Miss Monk and Sky Blue.
