t ARLINGTON DOWNS NOTES o e Most of the Major Bowes vaudeville players took the opportunity of attending Arlington Downs this week, when a couple of days lay-off made this visit possible. The troupe is currently in Fort Worth. One of the most pleasing features of the spring meeting at Arlington Downs is the excellence of the public address system. All of the faults which were apparent in this necessary adjunct in previous meetings have been corrected under the supervision of James E. Locklear, to whom much credit for the improved qualities must be given. Locklear, who has had many years of experience in this type of work, has brought the whole system to a state of almost perfection and the enunciation of the speaker is very plain. The horns are well spaced and announcements reach the most remote points of the vast Waggoner plant. Locklear spends practically all of his time at the control board, keeping everything at concert pitch. Apprentice Danny Brammer, although nursing a sore hip, the result of being kicked by Brides Delight while on his way to the post astride Wardell Ormont in the second race Thursday, returned to the saddle Friday. William "Palmer House" Ryan is a visitor and expects to remain for the greater part of the Arlington Downs season. L. "Turk" Beyda checked in from Hot Springs and expects to make an extended visit. Herbert M. Wolfe, widely known Kansas City sportsman and breeder, brought his visit to a close and returned to his home Thursday night. He expects to return here for the runinng of the Texas Derby and probably will be accompanied by Thomas C. Word en. John B. Partridge has arranged to transfer his small but useful stable to Jamaica next week. Acting for Mrs. Raymond Russell, owner of the Cactus Stable, Waldo Freeman purchased the three-year-old Sailors Gift from Mrs. V. Wyse. J. G. Brown acted for Mrs. Wyse in the transaction, which was private. J. L. Oglesby arrived from Hot Springs with Witch Lore. The horses former jockey Carl Meyer brought here for Dr. A. A. Young are Harold Wiley, Freeze, Irish Image and Countess Ann. Anthony Ortell notified friends that he has fully recovered from his minor operation and that he expected to leave Houston for Arlington Downs, Saturday. William Causey, trainer of the Mayfield 5- Stable, is confined to his apartment suffering with an attack of influenza. "Whitey" Price is directing the training of the horses during Causeys illness. Alia Nazimova, distinguished Russian actress, who is playing Texas in "Isens- Ghost," will be the guest of Mrs. Robert J. ODon-nell, of the Interstate Amusement Company, for the races at Arlington Downs when she
