THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1936 BRIGHT PLUMAGE, Brown Colt, by Macaw -Beaming; Property of C. V. Whitney; After Finishing Third in the Florida Derby Behind Brevity and Dnieper, Beat the Latter in the Derby Consolation Stakes at Tropical Park. How He Fared in the Chesapeake Stakes the Chart in Todays Paper Will Reveal. See Kentucky Derby Book for Past Performances. By NORRIS ROYDEN. I I Bright Plumage is hardly C. V. Whitneys best three-year-old prospect, but he is a colt that may go a long way in his division this year, even though he is a trifle shy on size. The brown son of Macaw and Beaming demonstrated last year, however, that he was fairly durable, as he went to the post fourteen times and came away with five victories, the most important of vhich was in the Endurance Handicap at Bowie. After a brief let up Bright Plumage was brought back to racing pitch to run in the Florida Derby, but he was unable to match the brilliant speed displayed by Brevity, although just failing to get up for second honors, which went to Dnieper. Just because Brevity beat him so easily at Hialeah Park is no sign that Bright Plumage will not be prominent in his division this season, although the writer doubts very much much that he will be one of the outstanding stars. The Endurance was the extent of Bright Plumages stakes victories, but he finished second in the Suffield and Springfield handicaps at Agawam, Seabiscuit taking one of the races and Professor Paul the other. The first was at six furlongs and the second at a mile. In both events the Whitney colt closed ground in the stretch. From Agawam Bright Plumage was shipped to Maryland to run in the Pimlico Futurity, in which he was outclassed, but he came back in the Endurance Handicap three weeks later to score in handy fashion over Bright Light, Nightcap, Transporter and other fair youngsters. Later during the Bowie meeting the Whitney colt won a six-furlong sprint over Gold Mash, Jay Jay and juveniles of similar class for his last start of the season. In his first start at Hialeah Park Bright Plumage obviously wasnt ready, as he weakened badly in finishing well back of Brevity at the end of a mile dash. The effort did him much good, as he showed a vastly improved effort in the Florida Derby, to be beaten five lengths by the Widener flash. Well back of the early pace, the son of Macaw made up ground gradually in the late stages and just failed to wear down Dnieper for secondary honors. Bright Plumage appears better adapted to running a distance or over the middle routes than he does in sprints, although his sire Macaw was a miler at best. His dam is Beaming, a daughter of Whisk Broom II. and Masda, the latter being a sister to the great Man o War. Through Macaw and Whisk Broom IT. Bright Plumage combines the blood responsible for the vast success of the Whitney stud through the years, but the influence of Man o Wars sister must be present somewhere in the Endurance winner, although hardly in his physical being. Red Rain naturally is regarded as the best three-year-old prospect in the Whitney stable, with Tatterdemalion also coming in for consideration, but Bright Plumage is no ordinary performer and he may prove successful in some of the secondary attractions for three-year-olds during the approaching season. f Domino.. 5 Himyar r Commando Mannie Gray LEmma C....... 3 Darcbin m J Guenn r fe . , V -Hermit Newminster L.
