Over 400 horses already are on hand, and all of the 700 stalls at Beulah Park will be filled when the Ohio racing season of 1936 opens on Saturday, May 9, at the popular Grove City plant. The spring meeting will embrace twenty-five days, closing June 6. Largest of the stables now quartered at Beulah Park is the string of nineteen owned by Sam and Glen Gorbet. This stable includes Gold Step, Flashing Thru, Hell Diver, Claflag, Port o Play, Jack Murphy, Vishnu and others. E. B. Shipp has twelve head at the course, including Irenes Bob, Porter Call, Vonnie, Adrian, Gay Days, Bunty Ann, Hair Trigger, Meteoric, Mt. Washington and Brown Polly. A like number will campaign for C. Dangman, who wintered in Florida, has taken up his duties, as has racing secretary Emmett A. Hile-man. The latter fashioned an interesting condition book for the first nine days of the twenty-five day meeting. Taking account of increased ownership of thoroughbreds in the state since wagering was legalized, he has included a number of races limited to Ohio horses. First race of the opening day of the meeting is a two-year-old dash of four furlongs for Ohio juveniles. The Waite gate will be used for the starts this year and fields will be dispatched by William A. Daly. A score of jockeys are on hand awaiting opening day. The riders present at the track include K. McCray, T. Everett, M. Butcher, W. Lowe, W. Gonzales, L. Martinez, W. Smith, E.Burns and F. Tice. Purses for the seven races on the daily cards will range up to 00. The meeting is the longest spring session attempted at Beulah Park since wagering was legalized and the purse distribution the most ambitious.
