PRELUDE TO CLARK HANDICAP Historic Churchill Downs Fixture Opening Attraction of Derby Meeting at Louisville. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 18. The Clark Handicap, historic prelude to the Kentucky Derby, will feature the inaugural program of spring racing at Churchill Downs next Saturday, April 25. The Kentucky Derby will be run one week later, on May 2. Many of the crack handicap horses of the country have been named for the Clark. Among the eligibles are John F. Clarks Clang, E. D.. Shaffers St. Bernard, Hal Price Headleys Whopper, Louise J. Hickmans Dusty Dawn, M. Goldblatts Gay Monarch, Mrs. Emil Denemarks Top Dog and Nectarine, H. G. Shoemakers Open Hearth, Brentwood Stables Late Date, M. J. Con-leys My Blaze, Midkiff and Wells Tearout, Milky Way Farms Whiskolo, C. Putnams Ladysman and others of the same caliber. The Clark is at one mile and a sixteenth, for three-year-olds and over, ,000 added. The secondary feature on opening day will be the Sophomores Purse, for three-year-olds, at seven furlongs. This event doubtless will attract a number of Derby candidates and will give a good line on some of the probable starters. The best two-year-olds will meet in the Federal Hill Purse, at four and a half furlongs. A maiden event for juveniles and three claiming races round out an excellent program for the opening. The Clark Handicap has always been a good race. It is as old as the Kentucky Derby, having been first run in 1875. Among its winners are such performers as Hindoo, Spokane, Boundless, Ornament, Plaudit, Kings Daughter, Star Charter, Buckhorn, Hodge, Old Rosebud, Exterminator, Chil-howee and Helens Babe.
