I j | GOLDEN FATE WINS IN DRIVE « Staves Off Final Challenge of Improved Great Haste. » Spectacular Stretch Duel Thrills Fans at Narragansett Park — Currants Surprises in Third. ♦ PAWTUCKET, R. I., May 4.— Golden Fate, sprinting son of imported The Satrap, turned in one of his top performances to account for the six-furlong race that was placed in the feature position on todays j program, at Narragansett Park. Fresh from his Texas campaign and a winner of his last I start, Golden Fate was forced to stand a hard drive to win by a half length over the j much improved Great Haste. It was a close finish for the minor payoff berth when Vote Boy, after setting the pace, began tiring in the last sixteenth, and while unequal to staving off the first two, barely lasted to hold Bubblesome safe. Open Range was the contributing factor in delaying the start and was taken to the outside before the start could be effected. The unruly one was the first under way, but it was not long before Vote Boy had taken command to soon open up a commanding advantage. Golden Fate was being reserved back of the pace, and Great Haste was also under steady restraint. Open Range was put under a drive in an effort to reach the pacemaker, but he was always held safe. It cost the pacemaker considerable effort to meet the bids of the Creech gelding, and when Golden Fate moved up inside the last furlong he gave way readily. Great Haste soon passed Vote Boy and made a valiant effort to reach the leader. He was, however, not good enough, and was forced to be content with second place. Vote Boy and Bubblesome were lapped as they sped over the line, with the pacemaker last- Continued on twenty-sixth page. ! After j ; the immense gathering of the opening day, . it was a surprisingly large throng that braved the cold rain to be on hand for the second day of the sport, which was con-I tested over a sloppy track. One of the better fields of the afternoon , paraded to the post in the fourth, which re- I j suited in a stirring finish, with Happy Knot, j : racing for Miss D. Melanson, getting the decision over Boston Brook, a member of the W. A. Jones string. Back of the dueling leaders, Party Spirit, in the livery of A. Mc-I Donnell, gained the show placing. Happy Knot, a particularly rapid beginner, i sped to the front almost as soon as the bar- , rier was lifted. In the run down the far side i of the track the Melanson mare opened up a big advantage. Boston Brook raced along in j j | nearest pursuit. Party Spirit was right with ] the Jones colt and it was these three that : j were destined to dominate the entire race. ! As is her usual custom, Happy Knot began to shorten strides in the stretch and Boston j I Brook, sent up on the inside, began gaining , on her with each stride. A few yards out J I Boston Brook had gained a slight lead. It was here that Thompson displayed his abil-j ity. He called on Happy Knot for her utmost and the mare responded well and gained the lead in the final few strides. Boston Brook, after showing in front, tired slightly despite Nertneys stout riding. The official placing, because of the closeness of the finish, was i j delayed until the printed picture was deliv- ! I ered to the judges. I The initial six furlongs offering developed i | into a two horse affair. Eddie Helck taking j j the lead at once, though closely pressed J by Wise King, managed to keep in front the entire way. The finish found the vet- ] i eran Harvey Elston hard at work on Eddie Helck to have a neck margin. Wise King ! i made a bold attempt on the inside nearing j the stretch to run down the High Time trick, but was not equal to the task. Sun Abbot, last to leave the gate, came with a rush at j the end to take third. I The unbeaten juvenile Goldey F. was hon- i ored when the second race of the afternoon, I an allowance test, was exclusively for three-| year-old fillies, and named in her honor. ! The Texas-owned Sadie F. aptly demonstrat- ed her superiority, racing to a front running I score. The finish of the six furlongs trip found the daughter of Donnacona three lengths to the good. Mieletta, a former member of the Araho Stable that now per-; forms in the interest of Mrs. J. A. Gorm-j ley, raced into second place, a length before Black Mistress. Currants, a Greentree Stable castoff, found the sloppy track to his liking and sped home with daylight showing over Lady Hockberger at the end of three-quarters in the third. Catchall was a close third. Dor-« noch was installed the choice but failed to perform to expectations, never giving his supporters any cause to be enthused at any stage of the race.
