I | ATTENDANCE AND MUTUEL I j FIGURES FOR DERBY DAY j LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 4. — While the number of persons who actually saw the running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs here last Saturday never will be known, it is estimated that the crowd numbered upwards of 70,000 persons, of which 60,000 or more were on the grounds. Approximately 10,000 saw the race from the center field and back stretch, with as many more obtaining a view of all or a part of the race from windows, house tops, telegraph poles, trees and other points of vantage outside the grounds. It was learned that the sale of programs ran about 6,300 more than on the same day last year. Last years sale was a record for the day. This gives some idea of the increase in attendance last Saturday. Betting on the sixty-second Derby totaled almost 0,000 more than a year ago, when 12,846 was wagered on the race won by j Omaha. Saturdays play on the classic amounted to 72,750. Including the Derby, wagers made Saturday totaled ,269,880, j against ,131,076 last year. While Saturdays mutuel handle fell a little short of estimates made in advance by some of the Downs officials, it was highly satisfactory. Tremors in stock and financial circles last week are believed to have had some effect on Derby day speculation. This total, however, is expected to stand as the largest for a single day at any American track during the year, a record held by Churchill Downs over many years.
