MAKES FIRST DERBY BET LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 4.— Mrs. Christine . Mayer, of Cleveland, made the first Derby bet She waited in line to be the first in the fifty dollar wicket in the battery of ma-chines opened at 9:30, and purchased a fifty j dollar straight ticket on Brevity and a place ticket of like denomination on Grand Slam. George Goettel, one of the oldest mutuel employes of the track, sold the tickets. While betting on the Derby started at 9:30, machines for the sale of tickets on the first race did not open until two hours later. Batteries of 194 ticket sellers and 265 cashiers handled the wagering.
