MERRIAM .................... i SAN MATEO, Calif., May 4.— At a meeting held in Governor Merriams office at Sacramento recently the governor told the members of the California Horse Racing Board that he favored the granting of a second permit in the Los Angeles sector to the Hollywood Racing Association, which is headed by A. T. Jergins, Long Beach sportsman, and Charles Cooper, Californias largest breeder of thoroughbred horses and owner of Rancho San Luis Rey. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Hollywood group, including president Cooper. The Golden State Jockey Club, of which Maury Diggs is the local representative, did not have a member at the meeting. It was believed some weeks ago that the Golden State Jockey Club, which sought to obtain permit to operate a summer track in Los Angeles, would be granted permission, but the swing of sentiment to the Hollywood Racing Association now makes that group the favorite to secure the necessary authority. The Hollywood Racing Association could obtain a permit to operate a summer session in a minute, reports state, but they are holding out for a cut of Santa Anitas winter dates. Governor Merriam is reported to have stated during the course of the meeting at Sacramento that he would be gratified if the California Horse Racing Board would mak-3 up their minds anent the second permit in Los Angeles in the near future. Messrs. Burke, Roth and McNaughton are reported to have left their decision for a future date.
