SARADA IN FAST TIME Runs Mile in 1:36% in Tyler Hotel Purse at Churchill Downs. ♦ Erin Torch and Yantis Finish Second and Third, Respectively — Porter Rides Good Race. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 7.— Running the mile of the Tyler Hotel Purse, the first of the double features offered before another large crowd and under clear skies at Churchill Downs this afternoon in l:St%, Sarada, F. A. Griffiths New York-owned son of Sir Gallahad III. came within three-fifths of a second of equalling the track record established by Peace Chance two years ago. Erin Torch, hope of Dixiana and a heavily-supported choice, was second, a length back of the winner and five lengths before Robert L. Bakers Yantis. Spanish Babe saved fourth from Stepinanna, Fast Stride and Compensatory, which rounded out the small field under colors. Earl Porter rode a well judged race astride the winner and his handling was largely responsible for the six-year-olds success. He had the Griffith colorbearer close up on the pace from the start and after reaching the stretch, sent him after the speedy Erin Torch. Near the final furlong, Sarada forged to the front and steadily drew away to attain his clear margin at the end. From the start, Yantis held third place but he tired in the last stages, which accounted for Erin Torchs large margin at the end. During the opening half mile, which Erin Torch ran in :46 s, Compensatory was a factor, but at the end of the three-quarters, which was timed in 1:10%, he gave way rapidly and was -a distant trailer at the end. No more favorable conditions could have prevailed for the sport and the crowd approached that of yesterday, when one of the largest week-day gatherings of the meeting was on hand. WINNING COMBINATION. Almarine and B. James provided a winning combination in the first race when the Mrs. H. Mcllvain three-year-old Waygood filly led Someone Else, Irish Ford and five others of her age to the end of a mile. Never far back and on the outside, while Brilliant Light and Someone Else were dominating the pace, the winner drove to the front near-ing the final furlong to reach the end two and a half lengths before Someone Else, which led Irish Ford by a length for second. While Brilliant Light tired rapidly, after leading the field for nearly three-quarters and Gray Jack was done after three-eighths, the others were never factors. Brilliant Light and the winner shared favoritism. One of the biggest disappointments of the meeting came with the running of the second race, at three-quarters, for maiden three-year-olds, when Foyot finished second to O. F. Woodwards Zsar. Lady Comrade was third. Ridden by J. Marinelli and working his way forward steadily, the winner, a son of Zev and Sardonyx, forged to the front in the last sixteenth to reach the finish three and a half lengths before Foyot. Taking command at the start, Foyot, which was coupled with Stop Scout as the Marsch-Goose entry, established a five-length advantage during the run to the stretch but tired rapidly in the last eighth. SHINING JEWEL BY HEAD. Shining Jewel provided the first popular victory when he lasted to carry Childs and Walkers colors to a head victory over Harper. The latter was a neck before Roberta, which tired after reaching the lead midway in the stretch. A long delay caused by the fractiousness of Ouray and Abby B., which began from outside of the stalls, occurred before the start, but the dozen got away in fine style with the winner, which had the services of Charley Swain, taking command in the first few strides. After reaching the stretch Shining Jewel gave way to Roberta, but he again took the lead, only to be under hard urging in withstanding the fast-finishing Harper. Brown Witch, a strong second choice, was never a factor. My Goodness carried Dixianas colors into second place, with Uvalde, one of the chief sufferers from the mishap, third. Due to his foul tactics, Fritz Hallam established a big lead during the run to the stretch, but the winner, a daughter of Cherokee — Catherine C, which was scoring her initial victory, easily wore him down, and the finish found her six lengths before My Goodness, which held second position the entire journey. Recovering ffom interference, Uvalde was sent to the inside for the drive and came with a rush that carried him before Epitome at the end. The latter was the second choice to the winner. Fritz Hallam tired rapidly in the drive.
