NEW YORK, N. Y... Oct. 2. Incalculably rich in tradition and monetary value, tomorrow will be Futurity day at Belmont Park, where fame and fortune will be bestowed upon the winners of the worlds greatest two-year-old race, also the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Grand National Steeplechase. In keeping with the importance of the day, a comfortable autumn sun promises to be in evidence, and despite the counter-attraction of the World Series, the largest and most enthusiastic crowd of the Metropolitan season is justly possible, so extensive is the interest in the Futurity and its supporting attractions. The public and owners of other candidates for the worlds richest and greatest race for two-year-olds generally consider it an open contest, yet Jerome H. Louchheims Pompoon is expected to go postward at odds approaching even money. Nineteen Futurity eligibles have been named overnight to start in the dash of six and one-half furlongs straightaway, to which the Westchester Racing Association adds 5,000 and, with all starting, the gross value will reach 9,850. The winners net share will amount to 5,290, the smallest winners ward since Sallys Alley was victorious in 1922. TOTAL OF ,238,745. Since its institution in 1888 the Futurity has paid its winners the imposing total of ,238,745. Small fields shape up for both the Jockey Club Gold Cup and Grand National, six being entered for the former, a two-mile race, and five for the countrys steeplechase classic over the three-mile course. With ,000 added, the Gold Cup will possess a gross value of ,000, with the winner also receiving a trophy valued at ,500, and the ,000 Grand National purse will be swelled to ,650 by the nominating and starting fees. The Futurity possesses a distinctly eastern flavor, although western owners are making a determined bid to gain their first triumph since Mrs. John Hertz Anita Peabody and Reigh Count were first and second in 1927, their hopefuls being E. R. Bradleys Billionaire, Milky Way Farms Dogaway and Reaping Reward, Mrs. William H. Fursts John P. War, Hal Price Headleys Apogee and Calumet Farms Privileged. Billionaire and Privileged are likely to be the third and fourth choices respectively as Joseph E. Wideners Optic, which, like Pompoon, is Philadelphia-owned, promises to rule the second favorite by virtue of his three recent triumphs, all scored over the Belmont Continued on thirty-seventh page. FUTURITY AT PALATIAL BELMONT PARI Continued from first page. straightaway. After his recent victory Marshall Fields Charing Cross came in for much attention and, with Sir Damion as a running mate, they may command as much speculative interest as Privileged. Apogee is the real top weight of the field, with 127 pounds, taking up all penalties hy virtue of her three stakes successes, including the rich Arlington Lassie, but her three-pound sex allowance makes her impost the same as that to be shouldered by Pompoon, whose principal triumphs were in the Junior Champion and National Stallion Stakes. Privileged and Reaping Reward are other stakes winners compelled to accept a penalty, but in their cases it will amount to only three pounds, making their weights 125 pounds. The former accounted for the Nyatt Handicap at Narragansett Park and the Champagne at Belmont, the latter performance giving him a high Futurity ranking as he ran the six and one-half furlongs in 1:17, faster than the distance ever has been run before over the Widener course, with the exception of Balladiers record-breaking effort in 1:16. Reaping Rewards penalty came about through his score in the United States Hotel Stakes at Saratoga. FASTEST SIX FURLONGS. Dogaway, which was beaten only a half length in the Champagne, has the Juvenile Stakes at Arlington Downs and the Hawthorne Juvenile Handicap to his credit, but his earnings in these events werent sufficient to incur a further Futurity penalty. The same applies to Billionaire in his East -View Stakes victory at Empire City. Billion- m aire was the runner-up to Maedic in muddy going in the Hopeful after having run the fastest six furlongs for a two-year-old during the Saratoga meeting. He qualified for the Futurity by winning a six furlongs sprint over the straight course. In gaining the post of favoritism, Pompoon established the best record of the candidates, with five victories in six starts, his lone defeat being handed him by No Sir at Saratoga when the son of Fompey Oonagh was making his first start in more than two months. He has won both his later starts and since the Junior Champion has been working steadily. Pompoon demonstrated in two races last spring, including the National Station, that his long striding was adapted to racing out of the chute. Dawn Play, King Ranchs runner-up in " " the Matron Stakes, is the only filly other than Apogee in the field, and her impost will be 117 pounds. Tattered, coupled with Eli Yale as the Greentree Stable entry, and Brookmcade Stables Cosmic Ray, are the only maidens in the large field, the former having flashed fair promise in three starts, while the latter displayed good early speed in his first appearance in competition earliei in the week. JEFFORDS TRIO. Half the Jockey Club Gold Cup field win sport the green and white-striped silks of Walter M. Jeffords, if all six accept Fire-thorn is the principal dependence of the Philadelphia sportsmans entry, as he Is expected to improve over his effort in the Manhattan Handicap Wednesday, and the switch in weights will be in his favor. The Manhattan was the first outing in two months for last years Cup winner, and he was beaten only a length by Action and Count Arthur while giving the latter eleven pounds. They carry scale weight of 124 pounds each in the Cup. Mrs. John Hertz colorbearer was runner-up in the race a year ago. Jean Bart and Giant Killer, both three-year-olds, will be Firethorns running mates. They were starters in the Lawrence Realization last Saturday with the latter finishing fast to be second to Granville. It Is expected that Jean Bart may be used to force the pace. Greentree Stables Memory Book, third in the Realization, is the other three-year-old in the field which Is grounded out by the Middleburg Stables four-year-old filly Esposa, which defeated Action at Narragan- sett two weeks ago. Her weight will be 121 N pounds and that of the three-year-olds 117 ", pounds each. BUS HR ANGERS BIG TASK. Joseph E. Wideners Bushranger is seek ing the honor of becoming the first winner of the Grand National Steeplechase under an Impost as great as 172 pounds, the previous high weight borne by a victor in the countrys jumping classic being 170 pounds, which the famous Good and Plenty shouldered in 1906. The total gross values of the three stakes is 6,500, not including the ,500 Trophy to the Gold Cup winner, and the four additional overnight races, none of which is claiming, will make Belmont Parks Futurity Day distribution 00,700 with no declarations from the stakes.
