BUBBLESOME FINISHES FAST Gets Up in Final Stride to Beat Highly Regarded Happy Knot. Latter Tires Fast in Rockingham Feature Alanad Gives Good Performance to Score in Fourth. SALEM, N. H., Oct. 2. Mrs. M. Farges Bubblesome drove up to overtake the pace-making Happy Knot, from Mrs. Elizabeth Snows stable, right at the wire, and won the five and one-half furlongs of the Press Handicap, which featured todays sport at Rockingham Park. Happy Knot was some four lengths to the good at the eighth post and Malley began looking back at that point instead of settling down to a drive. As a result Knott came through with the winner and got up just in time to catch the failing pacemaker. At the finish R. Robertsons Bright and Early was third, three lengths behind the runner-up, and All Forlorn finished fourth. Candy Maid and My Colin were the only other starters. The Rockingham Park management received the first break in weather conditions it has had during the meeting today, a warm and sunny afternoon prevailing for the sport. An excellent week-day crowd was out, and the betting was much more spirited than it had been previously. QUITS IN STRETCH. In the feature Happy Knot showed her usual early speed, taking the lead immedi- ately and opening up on all rivals. My Colin chased her closely to the stretch, where she quit, and Bubblesome drove through to provide the contention. At the eighth post it did not appear possible that Happy Knot could come back fast enough. At the sixteenth post she was faltering, but still looked to be the winner. Bubblesome at this point, however, under hard urging, stuck to his task and reached the front just in time. Bright and Early worked his way up gradually and drove through in the final sixteenth to take the show award by a head. My Colin quit to a walk after chasing the pace early and finished last. In the supporting feature of the afternoon Boy Valet, under a rousing ride from Malley, who had made the mistake of looking back in the previous, race, drove up to take the mile and one-sixteenth event by a length and one-half over Mrs. Ed Haughtons Swamp Angel. Onrush, which alternated in the pace-making with Legionary, was third, and the latter finished fourth in the field of six. Swamp Angel loomed the winner at the sixteenth post after taking the lead rounding the far turn, but was unable to withstand the last-minute rush of the winner. The time was 1:49. PLAYMORE EASILY. "Sport" Haymakers Playmore, a 15 to 1 shot, scored in the first event, drawing out in the final yards to beat Bill Gallaghers Queen Vic by three lengths. The latter was tiring in the last sixteenth, but managed to stave off Squawker by a length and a half for the place. Playmore was rated well back of the pace set by Queen Vic until they hit the stretch, where Porter drove him up fast, taking the lead as they "straightened out and drawing away after that. Zulu Lad followed Queen Vics pace closely to the far turn, where he quit Falermian was probably the best horse in the race. She was out in all the pace and eager to run, but was the victim of a poor ride from Swain, who drove her up on the heels of horses In the stretch and was forced to take back. Another long shot clicked in the second race, at a mile, when Miss Estelle Burchs Well Done charged up on the outside in the final eighth to beat the pacemaking Reigh Tetrarach from R. Robertsons string by half a length. The latter was two lengths clear of P. A. Shaws Yankee Prince at the end of the journey, with War Chase fourth in the field of a dozen. The winner was held at 23 to 1. Reigh Tetrarch set the pace, with Hasty Hanna after him. The latter moved menacingly on the turn, but was under the whip and dropped back when the drive began. The winner began his charge at the eighth post and flashed to the lead in the final sev-. enty yards. He met stubborn resistance from Reigh Tetrarch, but the Robertson racer fajled to withstand the challenge. FORTUITY IMPRESSIVELY. Liberty Lane Stables Fortuity, ridden by Charley Stevenson, went to the lead at the far turn and drew away from her field the rest of the way home to score a two and a helf lengths victory over Bill Gallaghers Say When in the five and a half furlongs event that was third on the card. The score rounded out a "Daily Double" that paid 98.80. At the end of the journey Say When was a neck clear of Dixianas Rafter, which was second for most of the journey. Lady Day finished third after a poor race over a strip she supposedly fancies. Rafter set the early pace, but the winner went to the van when Stevenson called on her and had little trouble staving off the challenges she met in the stretch, finishing under a hand ride. Joe Hartmans Alanad scored a front-running victory in the fourth, driving home a neck in advance of S. Rolfes Muriellynn. John Sperrys Waxwing finished a head in advance of Redley, which attempted to bear out when in a menacing position on the turn, and then appeared to try to bolt again right at the finish. Charley Stevenson rode the winner. He took him to the lead in the short run to the first turn and increased it on the back stretch, with Paul Junior and Redley after him. Redley appeared a winner as he moved into second place in the back stretch and went after the leader on the turn. Jackson, howver, was forced to take back when he attempted to bolt entering thP stretch. Muriellynn and Waxwing both rained much ground to get their placing. ftthOTBh it appeared from the press box that Wakwing had failed to get up for the TandSandA cfnarmade it three wins in and a and a half lengths in SSt Sf dSSXS Wind, icy Wind was a full length in front of the favorite, Sand Baby, at the finish. The winner broke well, was rated in restraint until rounding into the back stretch where he moved up steadily until at the three-eighths marker he was on even terms with the pacemaker and from that point home drew away at will. Continuity showed a good race and is ready for a top perform- j ance.
