LAUREL OPENS TODAY Maryland Fall Racing Season to Be Resumed After Two Days Recess. Featured Capital Handicap Attracts Eleven, Including Much Improved Roman Soldier. LAUREL, Md Oct 2. Headed by the ,000 added Capital Handicap and seven other well balanced events, completing the first eight-race program listed in Maryland since the fall season was ushered in a short time ago, racing in the Old Line State swings to the Boulevard Course of the Maryland State Fair, Inc., tomorrow, for a session that will terminate at the close of the present month. With an array of nine valuable stakes to be offered during the meeting for a total value of 1,500, and the plant in better shape than on any other occasion, due to many improvements, all indications point to a banner meeting. Since mid-summer a large crew was employed dressing the grounds for the return of the thoroughbreds, and it is doubtful whether any other track presents a more picturesque appearance than the local course. Notable improvements made here include the installation of fool-proof turnstiles at all entrances, new brush for all of the fences in the jumping field, and the annunciator system, which will, by flashing of numbers, provide a descriptional running of each and every race. While the latter features were installed for the accommodation of the general public, the horse colony was also given a treat as the entire stabling enclosure was given a fresh coat of paint and two new barns erected, to provide the plant with 1,100 horses. There are occupants in every stall, according to track superintendent Woods Dickcrson, while many others were forced to seek accommodations on the outside of the grounds and others at Pimlico and Bowie. INVITING PROGRAM. Racing secretary John P. Turner, Jr., has arranged one of the best programs to usher in the season, and it includes, besides the Capital Handicap and a two-mile steeplechase, the Cumberland Handicap, two races for two-year-olds, and three others, all of which have filled in excellent fashion. The Capital Handicap attracted no les3 than eleven starters for a dash of six furlongs, and it provides Elwood Sachsen-maiers Roman Soldier, winner of the Havre de Grace Handicap with top weight of 120 pounds, principally due to his splendid performance in that special that was run a few days ago. Others in the field are Jay Jay, winner of the Susquehanna Handicap at Havre de Grace; Cycle, which began the season by accounting for the Paumonok Handicap for the Howe Stable, at Jamaica; Billy I., a six-time winner this season for the Bomar Stable; Sandstone and Lcmont, from the Shandon Farm Stable, which are right at peak form now; Chief Chsrokee, a two-ply winner at Havre de Grace. Others are Mower, which raced creditably in New York; Indomitable, Golden Hind and Jim-mie Cabaniss, which have several smart performances to their credit. CUMBERLAND HANDICAP. In the race of secondary importance, styled the Cumberland Handicap, a field of six was named, including Buck Lang-horne, Knight Warrior, Booming Guns, Co-rinto, and a pair from the Maemere Farm Stable, Macriel and Mantagna. While in some Instances the fields are bulky, there is every indication that the program will furnish interesting racing, and a much greater throng than attended the inaugural last fall will welcome the return of the sport here. Continued on thirty-ninth page. LAUREL OPENS TODAY Continued from first page. Racing patrons will be provided with transportation on all of the leading railroad terminals and bus lines, and post time has been set for 1:30 p. m. daily. The "Daily Double" system of wagering, which was given its first trial last season, will be used again, closing a few minutes before the start of the first race. The "Double" will be run on the first and third races, as heretofore. Andrew J. Cummings and Frank J. Brady, president and secretary, respectively, expect a tremendous throng and stated that there is greater demand for boxes than ever before.
