Talma Dee, flashy two-year-old daughter of Bull Dog and Barbara, which races for Mrs. Ethel V. Mars Milky Way Farm Stable, became the champion filly of the season, although her record earlier in the year was not an imposing one when she dominated all of the running, to be returned winner of the eleventh Selima Stakes, 0,000 added feature that was worth exactly 2,480, and which topped the triple-feature program of the Maryland State Fair, Inc., before 17,000 frenzied fans at Laurel today. Opposed by fourteen other fillies. Talma Dee came out of the West to achieve her most important victory in a driving finish, leading Dawn Play, one of a pair which performed for the King Ranch Stable of Robert Kleburg, while third fell to Pcp-lum, from the C. V. Whitney stable, when she took the measure of Walter M. Jeffords Regal Lily and the eleven others which were led by the Branncastle Farm Stables The Schemer. THRILLING FINISIL The finish was one of the most thrilling in the history of this valuable fixture, and the camera retracted the original placing of the numbers, when Peplum was placed third after her number was posted as the runner-up for the prize. Peplum finished along the inner rail, lapped with the King Ranch filly, but evidently there was little doubt among the three placing judges as the number was flashed to the official board, but in the picture taken to reveal third the officials discovered the error and immediately gave the place award to the King Ranch filly. The eleventh renewal of the Selima attracted one of its biggest fields, and it was necessary to place Peplum outside the gate, but in her correct position as number one. The start was a good one for fourteen of the starters. Apogee, the standard bearer of the Hal Price Headley barn, becoming practically eliminated when he reared into the air almost unseating Stevenson. He was away so poorly that he had no chance while at the first turn. Considerable roughing occurred with Regal Lily and Bitindepen-dent, the chief sufferers when they were caught in the middle of the jam. Talma Dee was one of the first three from the gate and she went to the turn busily under A. Robertson to gain the van position. Evening Tide and Peplum, also from the inside berths, were in a front position, the Continued on twenty-third page. I I . Through the run down the far side of the track. Talma Dee was able to open up a three lengths lead and she was going along smartly, while Evening Tide and Whichprint were closely locked and just before Tonianna. Back of these Workman was rating Peplum on the outside while the others were vicing for positions. Leaving the back stretch, Talma Dee still maintained her early margin but there was a general closing up at the turn for home, with Dawn Play and Regal Lily coming into a forward position. Driving desperately as Talma Dee became menaced in the last quarter mile. Robertson used his whip freely on the flanks of the Bull Dog miss and, holding her together nicely, kept her going long enough to earn victory by one length. In the battle for the questionable place award Dawn Play, on the outside and charging strongly, earned that position, while Peplum, staggering along, barely beat Regal Lily a head for third. As the race was run. Regal Lily appeared as among the best in the contest which, duo to the roughing that took place at the first turn and the elimination of Apogee, was not truly contested. The winner ruling a rank outsider, covered the distance in l:39-,s and paid better than 19 to 1. BY SMALL MARGIN. The Maryland Handicap, the secondary feature, resulted in a thrilling finish when E. D. Shaffers Floradora, after an unsuccessful venture over the Laurel course, drove to a head verdict over the favored Greentrce Stables Memory Book nt the end of the mile and a quarter in which seven threc-ycar-iold3 were matched. The placing for third was also close for a half length in the wake j of Memory Book, Bow and Arrow and Giant Killer finished so closely aligned that it was decided to call upon the camera to decide the placing. The get of the sire Bull Dog were much in the limelight as Floradora, as well as Talma Dee, winner of the Selima. were sired by that stallion. A dozen of the most common plater distance performers on the grounds met for honors in the mile and one-sixtccnth test that ushered in the sport for the afternoon and the talent began the day advantageously when Mrs. J. M. Blacks veteran eight-year-old mare, Fervid, ruling a lukewarm choice, turned in her fourth triumph of the season to score in a thrilling finish. She took the measure of R. A. Moores Hail by a short margin, with Mrs. H. Shermans Candle Fly third before Berry Patch and the others In the field of limit size.
