NO EARLY DATES FOR EPSOM DOWNS IN FUTURE HOUSTON, Texas, Oct 24. When approached Saturday at Epsom Downs on the matter of racing so early in the fall, in preference to the December dates, manager Frank Reitman of the Texas Breeders and Racing Association, said: "We will never ask for October dates again. The early starting has kept the good horses away from Texas and horsemen prefer remaining in the East until the latter part of November. Many large bettors follow the good horses and this probably accounts for the small handle of money wagered at Epsom Downs this fall." In conclusion Mr. Reitman said: "In addition, many race lovers in this section are busy harvesting their fall crops at this time of the year and this was another handicap which prevented Epsom Downs from showing a much larger daily average play in the giant totalizator." -j
