DIE HARD raced to the front at once, lost command to JOHNNYCAKE momentarily, regained the lead before the clofe of the initial eighth and met a determined bid from ALANAD, then drew clear in the stretch. RUTLAND, steadied along back of the pace, swung to the outside in the stretch, made a determined bid to reach the leader, but was not good enough, though continuing willingly. GOLDEN PRINCESS saved ground at the stretch turn and came through on the inside to gain the show position in the last strides from ALANAD. The latter had good speed, but was unable to keep pace with the winner and tired in the last sixteenth. SHEPHERD BOY was unable to reach the leaders. JOHNNYCAKE tired after showing early speed. WHIPPER CRACKER dropped back badly -at the start, was taken up nearing the far turn, found clear sailing on the inside and made up ground in the last quarter mile. MATAS BROTHER worked his way up gradually on the outside and, though unable to reach the winner, was along in the closing strides to wear down WILLOW BUD for the place. The latter had good speed disputing the command for the first half mile with the winner and tired only in the final few strides. MALIGN was well up. but was unable to keep pace in the drive. CHANCING had speed from the start, was rated along back of the early pace established by UP AND UP, wore down the latter when called upon, met a bold challenge from MOUNTAINY MAN, disposed of him and, holding on stubbornly, outlasted TUGBOAT FRANK at the end. The latter trailed until reaching the stretch, moved up fast on the outside, drew on almost even terms with the winner and fought it out gamely. MOUNTAINY MAN moved up stoutly on the inside leaving the back stretch, made a bold bid to reach the winner, though he was not good enough; his rider lodged a claim of foul against the winner, which was not allowed. DON GUZMAN came through on the, inside when the leaders went wide at the stretch turn and he was unable to make up any ground under pressure. UP AND UP quit badly after going three-quarters..
