EPSOM DOWNS MEETING ENDS Crowd for Final Days Sport Far Below Expectations, Only About 3,000 Turning Out. HOUSTON, Texas, Oct 24. Racing in south Texas reached its climax this afternoon with the presentation of eight races, headed by the Hussion Handicap, which held fifth position on the program. Ideal autumn weather and a lightning-fast track prevailed for the occasion, but the attendance was far below expectations, with approximately 3,000 followers of the thoroughbred sport turning out to bid the horses farewell until next spring. Claiming races held the spotlight in all save one of the contests, the main attraction on the card, which was over the mile and a sixteenth route and brought together seven starters in the feature event Closing with a cyclonic rush Eva R. got up in time to gain the decision in the third race by a head over Buntingon, which had served as the pacemaker for most of the five and a half furlongs dash. Mullet came from a good way out of it to be third. Working her way up gradually Eva R. became prominent in the final quarter of the contest, and displaying a courageous effort, overhauled the leaders during the last sixteenth of the affair. Coming from behind, Rustic Lassie gained the verdict in the second race on the card, a five and a half furlongs dash, giving Bill Johnson a chance to figure in the leading trainers honors. Lady Laura finished second, a head behind the winner while third went to Even Play. Cornay reserved the chestnut filly off the pace and sent the daughter of Greenock after the leaders in the last quarter to gain the decision.
