ORIGINATOR OF "MONKEY" SEAT According to most turf writers, it was Tod oloan tnat introduced the so-called "monkey" seat in riding thoroughbreds. There has been some differences of opinion, which still prevail, as to the actual originator, some claiming that a negro rider named Ver- planck, who wa3 known under the sobriquet of "Monkey" Charlie, was the first to adopt that seat. Sloan, however, was the first to introduce the forward seat in England.
