READY FOR JAMAICA OPENING 1 Countrys Outstanding Sprinters to Meet in Paumonok Handicap. Many Improvements Made at New Yori Course Stuyvesant Handicap Revived After Lapse of Thirteen Years. NEW YORK, N. Y., April 10. Thorough- bred racing returns to New York next ThurgJ day. The twenty-one day spring meeting of the Metropolitan Jockey Club at Jamaica opens the season with every indication of it being the most successful session in many" years. During the meeting seven historic stakes will be decided. Two are for two-year-olds, two for three-year-olds and the remaining: three are handicaps for three-year-olds and older. This is an increase of one stake over a year ago, the Stuyvesant Handicap, for three-year-olds, at six furlongs, being re- vived after a lapse of thirteen years. The added money to these stakes has been increased 50 per cent over last year with entries increasing from 294 last year to 373 this year. The stakes are as follows: April 15 The Paumonok Handicap, three-year-olds and over, six furlongs, 0,000 added. April 17 Youthful Stakes, two-year-olds, five furlongs, ,000 added. April 24 Stuyvesant Handicap, three-year-olds, six furlongs, ,000 added. May 1 Wood Memorial, three-year-olds one mile and seventy yards, 0,000 added, and Jamaica Handicap, three-year-olds and over, six furlongs, ,000 added. May 8 Excelsior Handicap, three-year-olds and over, one mile and a sixteenth 0,000 added, and Rosedale Stakes, two-year-old fillies, five furlongs, ,000 added. MANY IMPROVEMENTS. Many improvements have been made since the autumn meeting for the comfort of spectators and horsemen. The old stewards and judges stand has been removed. These officials now will view proceedings from a van- tage point on the roof. The developing room for the "electric eye" is above tho stewards stand. Where the old" stand for the stewards and judges was, is a winners circle. The press stand has been removed to the rear of the grandstand, occupying a position similar to that at Aqueduct. The boxes in the clubhouse have been re-arranged. The restaurant has been enlarged and the bar, formerly upstairs, has been placed on the ground floor. Four rows of seats have been added to the grandstand and new stair-cases now give quick and adequate access to the stand. The entire plant has been freshly painted. The Paumonok Handicap, the feature of the program on opening day, was first run in 1906 and won by Thomas Welshs Inquisitor. Other winners include Red River, Resti-gouche, Springboard, Dunboyne, On Watch, Tryster, Zev, St James, Worthmore, Silver Fox, Polydor, Sarazen II., Questionnaire, Pilate, Sgt Byrne, King Saxon and Cycle. Thirty-two horses are eligible for this years renewal, and indications are the field will come from the following: Whopper, 126; Snark, 121; Tintagel, 120; Bill Farnsworth, 118; Jay Jay, 117; Fraidy Cat, 115; Cycle, 114; Sgt. Byrne, 112; Speed to Spare, 110; Clodion, 110; Liberal, 106;! Black Look, 105; Laughing Sun, 105; Ell Yaye, 103; Rebellion, 102; Riparian, 97, and Bagpipe, 96. Pompoon, last years futurity winner, is eligible under 116 pounds.but is not expected to go to the post Two other Futurity winners are eligible, Tintagel and Singing Wood.
