MARYLAND RACING CHANGES TO HAVRE DE GRACE 9 Fourteen Days Spring Meeting to Begin There on Monday ,000 Added Harford Handicap the Principal Attraction of Opening Card Whopper Top Weight With 124 Pounds Crowd of 20,000 Expected HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., April 10. The Maryland circuit of racing will be continued Monday at the course of the Harford Agricultural and Breeders Association, at Havre de Grace, where the fourteen-day spring session will be inaugurated at the course on the banks of the Susquehanna. Four stakes of major importance will be decided during the meeting. The Harford Handicap, a dash of six furlongs for three-year-olds and up with ,000 added tops the opening day card. The Philadelphia Handicap, also for three-year-olds and upward, at one and one-sixteenth miles, will be decidedon Saturday, April 17. The monetary offering in this race is ,500 added. The Chesapeake Stakes, exclusively for three-year-olds, and a barometer for the Kentucky Derby, and Preakness candidates, will be contested on Saturday, April 24. The " Chesapeake is also one mile and a sixteenth and has 0,000 added. Two-year-olds will be seen in action in the Aberdeen Stakes, four and a half furlongs dash that will be offered on the final day of the meeting, Tuesday, April 27. The Aberdeen is endowed with ,500 added. In addition to the four features named, the extensive program of the meeting calls for many overnight allowance and handicap events inter-spread throughout the book of conditions arranged by racing secretary Charles J. McLennan. TWENTY-FTFTII RUNNING. This years running of the Harford will be the twenty-fifth, and the list of its winners include such names as Equipoise, Balko, Exterminator and Billy Kelly. The last-named was victorious in the three consecutive runnings commencing in 1919, and established the time record for the fixture when, under 130 pounds, he was first homa in 1921, covering the six furlongs in 1:11. Of the thirty-eight nominations for the Harford this year, the names of fifteen have been passed through the entry box. Top weight of the band will be carried by Hal Price Headleys Whopper, which is asked to shoulder 124 pounds. The giant son of Pharamond II. and Romance has displayed ability to sprint, and his trials have been such as to point him for sprint efforts. His best recent race was his corking victory in the Hialeah Inaugural, when he ran over the six furlongs in 1:09 to establish a new track record over that fast racing strip. Whopper went slightly amiss after his performance in the Widener Challenge Cup and will make his first appearance Saturday since that race. However, he has trained well for this event, terminating his trials with a handy six furlongs in 1-15 Whopper will be ably assisted in the Harford by his stablemate, Fraidy Cat, which has a creditable record in his Florida campaign to force his recognition here. However, his training moves have been such that he is expected to come up to his seasonal endeavors fit and ready to give a good account of himself. Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt has named Speed to Spare and Postage Due. Speed to Spare has the advantage of a race as a conditioner. In the Rowe Memorial Handicap on opening day at Bowie the fleet son of Balko and The Spare flashed keen, early speed to set the pace but tired at the end, as though in need of a race. His weight is 111 pounds. Postage Due is making his first start of the season and has trained on his owners Sagamore Farm in the Worth-ington Valley so that little is known of the result of his trials. His impost today is 110 pounds. BOMAR STABLE ENTRY. Bomar Stable will pin its hopes on the effort of Billy Bee. Under 107 pounds, the son of Jean Valjean can be expected to make his presence felt. He was seen under silks in the Rowe Memorial and was obviously in need of additional conditioning which he has since received. Whopper, Fraidy Cat, Jay Jay, Speed to Spare, Postage Due and Billy Bee have all been nominated for the Paumonok Handicap, the traditional opening feature of the New York season, which is scheduled for next Thursday at Jamaica. Aneroid, which will carry the hopes of John A. Manfuso and 115 pounds, demonstrated his present excellent condition by winning the Severn Handicap at Bowie on Friday. In the Severn Aneroid shouldered 120 pounds and raced through muddy going to register his victory. J. W. Y. Martins Dark Hope will make his seasonal debut in the Harford. In preparation for the race, his latest trial was a handy six furlongs in 1:15. He has been allotted 110 pounds by racing secretary McLennan. HIGHER CLOUD READY. Mrs. Emil Denemarks Higher Cloud, under 112 pounds, should retain the good form he displayed in his Florida campaign to make his presence felt In an easy trial, the son of High Cloud cantered six furlongs in 1:16. Elmer Dale Shaffers good three-year-old filly, Log, accompanied Higher Cloud in his trial. She is the only three-year-old named for the race, and Wise Sister, which will represent J. B. Belk, is the only other entrant of her sex. The Araho Stable will confine its hopes to the efforts of New Deal, which has displayed creditable races at Bowie. New Deal is asked to carry 106 pounds. The lightweights of the field, apart from those mentioned, are Glen Riddle Farms War Emblem, 102; Brandywine Stables Turkey Run, 102, and E. R. Pikes Kenty, 100. The supporting card Is headed by the Colonial Purse, at six furlongs, fashioned exclusively for three-year-olds under allowances. Post time for the race will be 2:30 P. M. The management is expecting and is prepared to entertain a tremendous crowd, numbering as high as 20,000.
