THREE -YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 CASE ACE, bay colt, by Teddy Sweetheart; property of Mrs. Ethel Mars Milky Way Farm. He was considered one of the fastest two-year-olds of 1936 and is being prepared for both the Texas and Kentucky Derbys. The future books on the Derby hold him at 25 or 30-1. By NORRIS KOYDEN - t Just about the speediest of last years two-year-olds -was Case Ace, son of Teddy and Sweetheart in the Milky Way Farm stable, but doubts exist that he will be able to extend his lightfootedness over a distance of ground. Meanwhile his connections are taking no chances and he has been entered for such events as the Kentucky Derby. Case Ace won the first three of his starts as a juvenile, but he ran fourth In the next, in which he developed knee trouble, and was retired for the remainder of the season. He was given enough training this winter to be in condition, enough to win a six furlongs dash, but he didnt have quite time enough to be ready for the Santa Anita Derby and had to forego that engagement. Word of Case Aces promise spread early, and when he bore silks for the first time at Churchill Downs last May 7 he was odds-on. However, the Teddy colt justified his support by handily defeating seven other youngsters under allowance conditions by running four and one-half furlongs in :53. Given further time in which to develop by trainer Robert McGarvey, Case Ace started for the second time late in July in a five furlongs dash at Arlington Park, in which he equalled the track record of :58, previously set by Black Helen. He worked out an additional furlong to be in readiness for the Arlington Futurity, in which he rushed up at the far turn to take command and then to draw out into a long lead. He did not have a chance for a breathing spell and was doing his best at the end, where Orientalist came within a length and a half of him. He covered the six furlongs in the time of 1:11, very creditable for a two-year-old. Apogee, Supply House and other .good youngsters also were in the field. Case Ace made his next start at Saratoga, where, as in his previous efforts, he was held at odds-on, but he was unable to keep up with Billionaire in the early running, and weakened in the stretch to finish fourth back of the Bradley colt, Traulove and Flying Scot. It was believed at the time that the track may have been against him, but it developed later that his knee had given him trouble. The firing iron was applied and the colt was put away until the stable reached Santa Anita in December, and then trainer McGarvey brought him on very slowly. The Milky Way Farm colt comes by his speed naturally, his sire having been highly successful in France before being imported to this country, while two of his sons, Sir Gallahad III. and Bull Dog, have sired many fast horses in America. However, Case Ace must owe much to his dam, Sweetheart, by Ultimus Humanity, by Voter, which was a sensationally fast mare for Brownell Combs. Case Ace is bred more for speed than he is for stamina, and if he should make good in his quest for championship three-year-old honors, it probably will be because he had speed to spare, dominating his opposition as did Bubbling Over in the Kentucky Derby of eleven years ago. His chances also may be limited because of his knee trouble, although at the present time he is reported as progressing in satisfactory fashion. He has had a good start in his preparation for the Derby and may be regarded at this time as one of the more likely starters. fOrme Ormonde rFIying Fox -I n?.c3 .Vampire Galopin M J Irony r I rClamart 5 Saumur LAmie J Princess Catherine 1 Alice ; Wellington-!
