in i Saturdays sixtvthird annual Ken ¬ tucky Derby America s premier race virtually completed training for the mile and a quarter contest The favorable turn in weather com ¬ ing after weeks of intermittent rains in this area was all that had been lacking to assure a record crowd and possibly one of the most stirring races in all the long history of the 50000 added fixture In the wake of departing clouds came a sharp drop in temperature which according to weather prophets clinched a period of dry clear weather promis ¬ ing to extend through Saturday SaturdayAlthough Although the track was muddy anct holding as several candidates the last to receive longer trials worked today it is one of the most rapidly drying strips in the country and is expected to be fast within thirtysix hours possibly sooner The regular track crew augmented by additional men and implements worked the course as often as pos ¬ sible todav and there was to be no letup until it is returned to its best condition While a fast track is expected to reduce the chances of a few prospects for such footing cheered up a majority of the Derby camps as most of the hopefuls are at their best on a diy course Meanwhile War Admiral Samuel D Riddles Riddlesleader leader of the eastern contingent which in ¬ cludes nine entries continues to rule favorite even in the face of sparkling private trials by several of his rivals and fine public performances by others since the Man o War colt reached the pinnacle position in public admiration by winning the Chesa ¬ peake Stakes at Havre de Grace Within the past several days the Waggoner broth ¬ ers Heelfly and Howard Maxwells Scene shifter have turned in excellent workouts for the race while Mrs H C Phipps Melo ¬ dist won the Wood Memorial Stakes Fenc ¬ ing also owned by Colonel Howard turned back a field of Derby eligibles in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland and James W Parrishs Dellor subdued another band of Derby horses in the Trial Purse here but in spite of these challenges to his envied posi ¬ tion as favorite War Admiral has weathered the assaults though holding only a narrow edge An even score of starters was seen aa Continued on in the race Had Stout been unable to leave Jamaica Sande probably would have started only Scene shifter in the Derby leaving Fencing on the sidelines As it is Jack Westrope who rode Fencing to his Blue Grass Stakes victory is available for that threeyearold Saturday and the Howard stable is ready to fire at the 50000 prize with two barrels This com ¬ bination is considered one of the strongest of the western forces forcesAt At the same time Robert McGarvey train ¬ er for the Milky Way Farm Stable of Mrs Ethel V Mars continued to ponder the ad ¬ visability of starting three of his eligibles Reaping Reward Military and Case Ace McGarvey definitely will saddle Reaping Re ¬ ward and Military on which Alfred Robert ¬ son and Charles Corbett will have the mounts but whether he also sends Case Ace to the post depends on his being able to secure the services of a suitable rider Ray ¬ mond Workman who was to have one of the Milky Way mounts is unable to fill the en ¬ gagement From McGarveys into a satisfactory condition and rather than take a chance of something serious developing from a race as hard as the Derby it was decided to declare him out outGerald Gerald is the only real casualty of the training grind although for a time it was feared that Miss Mary Hirschs No Sir might miss the race A trifle sore from a recent workout examination indicated a possible injury serious enough to change plans for the Hirsch horse but he recovered almost overnight and since has come up to the Derby in good fashion fashionHeelfly Heelfly Sceneshifter and Fencing which performed smartly in private drills yester ¬ day along with J H Louchheims Pompoon Marshall Fields Sir Damion Townsend B Martins Court Scandal Walter A Carters Clodion and Case Ace given in less strenu ¬ ous preps at
