HAMILTON APPLEGATES APPLEGATESCHIGRE CHIGRE OUT OF DERBY LOUISVILLE Ky May 6 What makes the Kentucky Derby the most soughtafter classic of American racing is the trials and tribulations that come with winning it Ham ¬ ilton Applegate until several years ago treas ¬ urer of Churchill Downs Inc sent out Old Rosebud to win the 1914 renewal and estab ¬ lished a track record for the race and this year he hoped to see another standardbearer duplicate the feat Chigre which won the Cincinnati Trophy for him last summer wintered in fine fashion and appeared to be coming up to the race in fine style He showed a fair effort in the Clark Handicap last Saturday against older opponents and then sickness halted his training trainingSeveral Several twoyearolds that were moved into his barn started a coughing epidemic and it did not stop until it had reached the colt But Applegate is too much of a sportsman to give up and he hopes to make another try next year
