KENTUCKY DERBY ON THE AIR Thrilling Sound Drama of Famous FamousRace Race to Be Broadcast hy Clem ClemMcCarthy McCarthy Over NBC Every scene of the thrilling sound drama of the Kentucky Derby from lastminute forecasts to the glad or sad aftermaths will be included in the broadcast over the NBC Blue Network Saturday May 8 Five announcers and six engineers will cooper ¬ ate using seven microphones to make this years broadcast of the American turf clas ¬ sic the most vivid of all The climax of the broadcast will be the tense two and a fraction minutes when the field of threeyearold aristocrats pounds its way over the mile and a quarter course A parabolic microphone will pick up the hoof beats as the horses come down the home stretch and other microphones at the fin ¬ ish line will catch the frenzied shouts of the throng throngBut But the broadcast will begin long before the microphones catch the roar of thou ¬ sands of voices in the mighty chorus Theyre off offClem Clem McCarthy NBC commentator and turf authority will head the staff of an ¬ nouncers who will begin their work by de ¬ scribing the scene and providing lastminute information and forecasts The sounds of the crowd the bustle in the paddock and other picturesque details which make Churchill Downs the Mecca of turf fans will all come over the microphones microphonesATOP ATOP THE GRANDSTAND GRANDSTANDIn In addition to his preliminary broadcasts McCarthy will describe the running of the race from a booth atop the grandstand at the finish line lineAmong Among the announcers who will cooper ¬ ate with him are George Patterson of NBC associated station WAVE Louisville who attracted national interest by his descrip ¬ tions of the flood last January Charles I Lyon of the NBC Chicago staff and Lyle Van of the NBC Radio City staff staffA A microwave transmitter will be carried along the clubhouse veranda to obtain com ¬ ment and forecasts from prominent figures I in the racing world This will be picked up by a receiver at the track and rebroad cast to the network Another microphone will be at the presentation stand where the winner of the race will receive the cup and wreath of victory victoryStatements Statements of owners trainers and stable ¬ men will be picked up at the paddock On the back stretch there will be an announc ¬ ers microphone and a mobile unit Tech ¬ nical details of the broadcast will be in the hands of NBC Chicago engineers
