DERBY GATES NEW POSITION Starting Point to Be Moved Fifty Feet Nearer Quarter Post Dif ¬ ficult Angle Eliminated LOUISVILLE Ky May 6 Practically all of the angle at the starting point for the Kentucky Derby will be eliminated by the new position of the starting gate decided upon today by starter William Hamilton with the approval of Colonel Winn However at least nineteen horses must start for the change to be made madeHamilton Hamilton with the assistance of his crew moved the starting apparatus about fifty feet nearer the quarter post and placed it in such a position that the horse having the inside position needs only to break straight to be able to skirt the inner rail along the front stretch stretchSufficient Sufficient room is available at the new starting point to line up the auxiliary ma ¬ chine of four stalls at the end of the Bahr apparatus of fourteen stalls and still leave enough room on the outside for three frac ¬ tious horses if Hamilton is called upon to place that many on the outside A tem ¬ porary fence will mark the outside line from the starting point to the outer rail of the straightaway straightawayThe The new starting point for the Derby will be twenty feet from the quarter post and Colonel Winn is hopeful that it will elimi ¬ nate the crowding at the start that has been noted in several previous runnings of the event It may cause the race to be run in a fraction of a second slower time because of the smaller chance the horses have of gaining momentum before passing the offi ¬ cial starting post
