MONTROSE AT ODDS OF 10 TO 1 Banburg was the favorite for the Derby in 1887 at 7 to 6 Jim Gore a son of Hindoo at 3 to 1 Pendennis 4 to 1 Ban Yan at 5 to 1 Jacobin at 6 to 1 Clarion atv0 to 1 and Montrose at 10 to 1 Montrose won easily with Jim Gore second and Jacobin third The late Allen W Thurman of Columbus Ohio later purchased Montrose and brought him into Ohio to be used as a stallion on his stock farm in Madison County Here the horse had little opportunity as a sire yet he sent some good winners to the Chicago races among the number was W C T by Montrose Georgie H by imported Kyrle Daly
