Here and There on he Turf Aneroids Time Near Record RecordHis His Speed Smothered Oppo ¬ nents nentsMet Met With Trouble in Dixie Count Morse Whopper Victori Aneroid uncovered an amount of speed I and stamina of which he was not suspected of possessing in running the second fastest mile and onequarter in America Whisk Broom ILs alleged record not included in making a runaway of the Suburban Hand ¬ icap Only Sarazens mark of 200 in de ¬ feating Epinard in the International Special stands ahead of Aneroids time as long as wellfounded doubt of the record attributed to Whisk Broom II exists When the H P Whitney star won the Suburban in 1913 under 139 pounds the timer generally is believed to have stopped his watch at the wrong pole giving the son of Broomstick an honor to which he was not entitled There was nothing flimsy about the time made by Aneroid in taking the latest running of the Suburban Going to the front right after the start and setting a sizzling pace which always had him clear of his opponents John A Manfusos colorbearer a son of The Por ¬ ter and Outburst by Messenger held on so well that the others dropped away in the stretch stretchUnder Under a stout hold from Charles Rosen garteri as he went the opening quarter in 23 half mile in 46 threequarters in 111 and mile in 135 Aneroid was set down turning into the stretch with the re ¬ sult that he widened out on his rivals and thereupon was taken in hand again to com ¬ plete the mile and one furlong in 148 and the ten furlongs in 201 Although his pace became slower as might be expected the Continued on tMrtyfoufi1jijfiagerhj HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page opponents of the mediumsized son of The Porter were worn out trying to keep within striking distance of him By quarters his fractions were 23 23 24 24 and 24 Ordinarily a horse doing a mile in 135 would have required 27 or more for another quarter and if Aneroid which had been weeded out of the Llangollen Stable as a yearling for 350 had slowed up in this manner the Suburban victory would have gone to Esposa EsposaDiscovery Discovery in winning the Arlington Han ¬ dicap two years ago in 201 also has a race to his credit that was faster than An ¬ eroids while Sun Beau scored the first of his Hawthorne Gold Cup victories in the same time as required by Aneroid Monday The Manfuso fouryearold went into the Suburban with a record of three triumphs and one third in the four starts this season having accounted for the Harford and Bal ¬ timore Spring Handicaps and an overnight event before taking show honors in the Dixie Handicap in which he was beaten a length and a quarter by Calumet Dick with Finance running second He was racing head and head with those two colts when fouled in the stretch Handicapper John B Campbell took cognizance of Aneroids good Dixie effort by raising his impost in the Suburban to 110 pounds from 108 but as it happened he still underestimated the colts ability The Suburban winner Is bred very much like Toro The Porters best son which was from Brocatelle Outburst by Messenger and the dam of Aneroid is also a daughter of Brocatelle BrocatelleEsposa Esposa was nearest Aneroid all the way in the Suburban but just wasnt good enough to place him in danger Memory Book had to be ridden stoutly by Eddie Arcaro but even so he advanced slowly after losing ground on the turn Dark Hope tired badly after being a contender for a mile and a furlong while Maeriel and Count Arthur were unable to reach the first three at any part of the race Rosemont was among the last of the nine starters to settle into his stride and was under steady restraint for the straight run of threequarters but when called upon he wasnt able to respond He was in between horses in the stretch and only ran down tired horses at the end The Foxcatcher Farms veteran has always done better after getting one race under him but he had trained well for the Suburban and consequently was given considerable sup ¬ port It is unfortunate that he came out of the engagement something the worse for wear as he could be expected to make trou ¬ ble in his next outing outingCount Count Morse continues to perform at his best judging by his good attained victory in the Blue and Gray Handicap at Wash ¬ ington Park his third such triumph In as many starts The winning streak of the fouryearold son of Reigh Count and Nellie Morse from Warren Wrights establishment began in the Ben Ali Handicap at Keene land and was followed up in the Clark Hand ¬ icap at Churchill Downs The latter score was nearly a month ago but trainer Frank Kearns apparently has kept him in good trim as he showed no disposition of slowing down In accounting for the holiday feature at the Homewood course In carrying 120 pounds two less than shouldered by Finance he beat the latter by three lengths at the end of the mile and a furlong In the Dixie Finance had up 118 pounds and he finished inches in front of Aneroid Whopper re ¬ turned to winning form in outlasting Azucar in the Col Alger Memorial Handicap De ¬ troits holiday feature all of which suggests that more interesting races in the handicap division may be expected
