ABNE81RUNS GOOD RAGE Carries 122 Pounds to Victory in Grade C Handicap Fitter Favored by New York Spec ¬ tators but Races in Disappointing Fashion Weather Good BELMONT PARK June 1 Dewey Bent hams Abner under a burden of 122 pounds ran one of his best races at Belmont Park today when he scored in the Hewlett Handis cap for those of class C in the graded handicaps A D B Pratts Sunport raced to second place and John Hay Whitneys Royal Feast was third before Conte which just saved fourth from Epical EpicalAfter After the immense Decoration Day crowd of Monday there was a natural falling off in the attendance but with another day of midsummer heat a big crowd was out and while there was no feature scheduled the sport offered was entertaining entertainingIn In the sixfurlong handicap over the main course which went to Abner George D Wideners Fitter was made the choice and her performance was a disappointment disappointmentIn In the early stages she did not seem to have a reasonable excuse and dropped back badly Broad Ripple beginning from the outside stall showed a great turn of speed when she ran the first quarter in 22 to show the way and Royal Feast went after her steadily with Fitter in third position The Widener filly did not stay with this pace when the half was reached in 4516 and by that time Royal Feast was wearing down Broad Ripple RippleSUCCESSFUL SUCCESSFUL CLOSING RUSH RUSHAbner Abner was far back and Stout was saving ground with him and Sunport was well back of the Bentham horse but racing steadily Then Royal Feast put Broad Ripple away and until well inside the final furlong ha looked the winner but Abner was closing steadily and in the last seventy yards he was by to win going away by a length Sun port finished with a rush on the outside to also beat the Royal Minstrel colt a length and a half for second place placeConte Conte was well back of these but he had steadily closed ground in the running and the race was one to suggest he is coming to his good form formThe The steeplechase of the day was over the short course and for maidens It brought victory to Mrs Gwladys Whitneys Brant with Lucon one of the subscription jumpers that races for the Howe Stable taking sec ond place and Angus from the Log Cabin Stable easily beat Bay Dean for third with Catalano the only other starter starterMrs Mrs Parker Comings Down East proved an easy winner of the Cherry Valley a five furlongs dash through the Widener course for juveniles He was one of the easy vic ¬ tors of the day when he scored over Mra Edward Friendlys Jacola and Airly Beacon from the Greentree Stable led John Hay Whitneys Rare Bloom home
