MUDDY TRACK TRIALS Four Important Kentucky Derby Candidates Seen in Action. Lawrins First Appearance on Track Impresses Observers -Cant Wait Sent Five Furlongs. i LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 8. Four of the most important Kentucky Derby candidates on the scene, Lawrin, Tiger, Mountain Ridge and Cant Wait, were seen on the muddy track at Churchill Downs this morning, although little in the way of speed was asked of any of them. Tiger, Mountain Ridge and Cant Wait went through short, easy trials, while Lawrins work was confined to a gallop of about a mile and a half. Cant Wait, the Derby hopeful of Myron Selznick, motion picture producer, accomplished the most ambitious trial of the group and under the direction of trainer J. "Tommy" Taylor worked five furlongs. The son of Victorian, which is to be shipped to Jamaica for the Wood Memorial Stakes before his Derby engagement, was kept in the middle of the track and was timed in 1:10, breezing all the way. The effort was very satisfactory to Taylor, who pointed out that the colt needs little work to keep him on edge. MARS STARS GALLOP. Breezing for the first time since their arrival from Hot Springs, Tiger, winner of the Arkansas Derby, and Mountain Ridge traveled three furlongs, each as an opener for more strenuous work to come. The two Milky Way Farm three-year-olds, training under Robert McGarveys supervision, were strongly restrained all the way in their short spins and were timed in :41 each. Another Derby eligible from the same stable, C-Note, breezed the same distance in :37. Lawrin, which won Hialeahs Flamingo Stakes under the silks of Herbert M. Woolf, was on the track for the first time this morning since getting in from Florida and his appearance greatly impressed the coterie of observers on hand during the training period. Lawrin showed no ill effects from his long trip from Florida and can be expected to resume more serious training immediately. CO-SPORTS LONG WORK. Other Derby eligibles on the track for exercise of one kind, or another were Bert Friends Co-Sport, Morris Vehons Invincible, J. S. Hawkins Pepper, Mrs. Payne , Whitneys Gangplank and Perfect Peace and Mrs. Thelma Otts Employer. j Co-Sport was given the longest trial of the morning among the Derby hopefuls, the son I of Cohort being sent three-quarters in 1:25, I strongly restrained. Pepper breezed three-eighths in :40 and Invincible worked a similar . distance, also breezing in three seconds slower time. Gangplank, Perfect Peace and Employer indulged only in long gallops. Another Derby eligible, Mrs. Frank J. , Navins Last Message, was shipped to Lexington . today to await the opening of the i Keeneland season. The filly was accompanied . ! by several of her stable companions.
