CORAL GABLES, Fla., April 8. Chalking up his third score of the year and his second of the meeting, Faust, five-year-old horse racing for the western Canadian patron A. G. Tarn, was winner of the Sarasota Purse, a test of six furlongs under claiming condition that served as the feature race for the semifinal day of the Gables Racing Association at Tropical Park today. Carrying 116 pounds, two less than the burden carried by Cosgrave Stables Lipton, one year older than the flashy son of Diavolo, he scored in convincing manner when he reached the line leading by two lengths as he ran the three-quarters in 1:11. Third went to Lucky Jean, while Blind Pig led the light weight of the small field when she defeated Sorceress. JockeyK. McCombs rode the winner of the feature and rode a daring race when he sent the A. G. Tarn colt up on the inside of Sorceress, Lipton and Lucky Jean midway in the back stretch when the trio were racing abreast as they fought for the lead. Moving through the narrow opening just as the turn was reached, Faust gained a short lead, then battled along briskly to come away from his persistent opponents during the stretch drive. Lipton, after furnishing most of the early opposition to Sorceress and a factor in the defeat of that miss, stubbornly held to second place to be just a half length before the fast travelling Blind Pig. In the later battle, Lucky Jean was only a neck from the Fanfare Farms sprinter, while Corceress wilted into last place. Faust was the choice. GOOD CROWD IN ATTENDANCE. With the long Florida season coming to a conclusion here Saturday, a large gathering watched the sport for the next to last day and ideal weather was again on tap. Racing was spirited throughout the matinee and in several cases the camera was called into action. Sprinters that have been missing from the winners circle since the start of the Florida season in December met in the first race of the afternoon. It saw Ethels Choice, making her first start in the silks of J. Johnson, proving best to score in easy fashion. Ruling as the favorite, the four-year-old daughter of Cohort had good speed to displace Gurt Palmer at the turn out of the back stretch, after which she remained in front to score by two lengths. Pay Rack finished in second place, with Speed Queen capturing. third.. Jockey C. Bierman rode the winner. Another favorite was successful in the i second when Mcdway Stables Euryalus overcame crowding at the start to account for the contest in a furious finish. Ridden by jockey F. Schieh, to cut down a six-. I length gap held by Chispa and Broom Tour, the veteran eight-year-old gelding came to the last line of the five and a half furlongs sprint to score by a neck. Gayette, at liberal odds, was the one to chase the Medway gelding to the end of the short trip, while Noajean captured third. The start found several of the contestants eliminated when a bad jam occurred in the first few strides, and it saw Do It .Celtic Legend and Ivonia suffering most from the buffeting. NINE START IN THIRD. Nine platers made up the field in the third race that was a split of the opening event, : and in one of the best finishes of the day Darby Duke earned his second purse in teen months when he beat Mayro by inches i at the close of the three-quarters mile race. Stealing through on the inside when Cosmic ; Ray, the early pacemaker, carried Mayro wide at the turn into the front lane, the Darby Dan gelding drove through the open- ing to gain the award in the last strides. Mayro and Cosmic Ray held the leading po-: sitions virtually throughout and they were , three lengths apart as they led the others. The juvenile test of the day was the fourth offering and it gave Giboir, from the Para-s gon Stables, his racing diploma when he defeated his ten rivals to score by inches at the 1 close of four furlongs. He took the measure 5 of Bala Ormont, while Lady Hav landed in s third position before Whinchat. The early pace was provided by Lady Hav. Charging E up swiftly on the outside at the stretch turn - the Paragon Stables youngster drew abreast i of Lady Hav then rallied to a strong drive to gain the decision from Bala Ormont, which i stole through on the inside at the stretch i turn.
