l Seabiscuit Listed as Starter in 5,000 , Coast Handicap Only Eight of Twelve Entered Likely to Start Howard Star Draws Outside Post Position for Bay Meadows Outstanding Stake. SAN MATEO, Calif., April 16. Seabiscuit, the Western champion, drew first blood in the Bay Meadows Handicap when he was alloted outside post position in a field of thirteen named for the big Saturday race. Trainer Tom Smith was so anxious to obtain the outside place that he made an effort to have Seabiscuit put on the outside without having to draw for his -post position. The stewards failed to sanction such a move, but in the drawing for positions Friday morning, Seabiscuit came up with the desired stall anyway. The "outside" in the mile and one-eighth race gives Seabiscuit an advantage. He need not fear such interference as he met soon after the start of the Santa Anita Handicap, and jockey George Woolf should have him in his position close to the leaders and on the outside before the first turn is reached. After that it seems to be just a matter of form for the son of Hard Tack to go to the front and "walk his beat" 133 pounds and all. - COMPLIMENTARY ENTRIES. Of the twelve horses named to oppose the Howard champion in the 5,000 added race, at least two of the entries seemed to be complimentary and at least a couple more are doubtful. Neither Ligaroti nor King Saxon were named for the event when the entries for the race were first taken Thursday morning, and they were merely placed in the entries Friday. Patty Cake and Count Atlas have been entered in the Childrens Hospital Benefit Handicap, the days secondary feature, and will probably go in that race. This leaves seven to oppose Seabiscuit as Advocator, one of the others, is stable companion of the Howard star. Those with a chance to defeat Seabiscuit are Sweepalot, Gosum, Indian Broom and Today. AlMiave at one time or other raced well in first class company. Don Roberto, the California-bred; Rommy, the three-year-old, and Prim-ulus, the mare, do not seem to have much chance." The race will not be broadcast unless it comes between 4:30 p. m., and 5. p. m., the time of the regular daily broadcasts from Bay Meadows. About 40,000 admission tickets have been sold. There was a slight possibility that the handicap would be run over an off tracc when some dark clouds blotted out the sun early Friday afternoon. In the event of rain some of Seabiscuits foes, especially Indian Broom would come in for a stronger play as Seabiscuit is not nearly as good on an "off track as on the fast while Indian Broom likes muddy footing. .
