KENTUCKY DERBY GALLOPS Candidates for Famous Blue Grass Race Work at Churchill Downs. Tiger Goes Mile in 1:42, Mountain Ridge in 1:42 Stagehand and The Chief Half In :49. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 15 The training paces of Kentucky Derby entries quartered at Churchill Downs were speeded up this morning, whqn two of them, Milky Way Farms Tiger and Mountain Ridge, worked the fastest mile trials of the spring here. Further Derby operations saw Bert Friends Co-Sport in an easy but useful mile prep, Herbert M. Woolfs Lawrin show to advantage over three-quarters and Maxwell Howards Stagehand and The Chief breeze for the first time since their arrival from California last Monday. The track was fast, though, deep. Having many admirers in this section, Mrs. Ethel V. Mars Milky Way pair, trained by Robert McGarvey, gave their rooters something to talk about by splendid performances. Tiger, winner of the Arkansas Derby, breezed eight furlongs from the stand back in 1:42, while Mountain Ridge, which has not entered competition since his victory in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes here last fall, accomplished the same .distance starting in the chute and from the Bahr gate in 1:42, despite loafing badly after seven furlongs, during which he was accompanied by Warbridge. Mountain Ridge and Warbridge, moving along snugly in hand, covered seven-eighths in 1:27. At this stage Warbridge was pulled up and the former declined to extend himself thereafter. HOLD SPOTLIGHT. Word that trainer Earl Sande was to breeze the two Howard candidates spread yesterday and during the night and they were the cynosure of all eyes as they came on the track for a half mile spin together. Sande brought Stagehand and The Chief out a few minutes past 6 oclock and starting from the four furlongs post and always under stout restraint they were timed in :49, the quarter in :24.. While they galloped over the Downs course yesterday, their moves this morning formally inaugurated their training at the scene of their objective. Lawrin, another idol of many fans and winner of the Flamingo Stakes, did an extra nice move, although trainer B. A. Jones did not "put him against the watch." Running three-quarters from the six furlongs post to the stand in 1:15 was not a surprisingly fast performance from a time standpoint, but the ease with which he accomplished the effort made a deep impression on horsemen. The Woolf home-bred ran the opening quarter mile in :24, four furlongs in :49 and five-eighths in 1:01. CO-SPORTS EASY MILE. Trainer. R. T. Runnels program for Co-Sport called for a very easy mile, which the Cohort gelding traversed iril:48. He went into action at the seven furlongs post and, rated under a strong hand, was timed in :26 for the quarter, :52 for the half, 1:21 for three-quarters and 1:33 for seven-eighths. Demonstrating that when, lie feels so inclined he can get a high order of speed out of his legs, Mountain Ridge "clicked off the first three-quarters of. his very valuable workout in 1:13, with Warbridge right beside him. He marched over the first quarter from a good start in :23. For a half mile he was timed in :47 and he completed five furlongs in 1:00. After about; three-quarters Warbridge tired perceptibly and while shortening his stride the Derby horse showed an inclination to loaf. After War bridge started to pull up, Mountain Ridge and i to be urged and even would not do anything ! near his best. Trainer McGarvey says that Mountain Ridge has not changed his habits since last year and has never been willing to do much unless accompanied by another horse. In several of his races last year he eased himself after getting to the front and this was particularly true in The Jockey Club Stakes. TIGERS EVEN WORK. In his drill, Tiger went into action with a quarter in :26 and, rated at an even pace, closed his assignment with .a similar distance in :25. He ran the first half of the distance in :51 and three-quarters in 1:17. This colt, which was considered by many to be the best of last years juveniles, is doing extraordinarily well, according to his connections, and it is easy to sense the feeling of high respect for this son of Bull Dog around the Milky Way barn. Following several weeks of brisk training after coming here from California, Myron Selznicks Kentucky Derby candidate, Cant Wait, was shipped today to New York, where he will start in the Wood Memorial Stakes. He went in charge of trainer J. "Tommy" Taylor, who took eight others east.
